I have a Ruger 7 MM Mag that I would like to reload for. It's one of my deer rifles. I usually use 140 gr Win PPts in it. It's deer-accurate but I would like it to be better. I also load for 308 and 30-06. I noticed that some of you recommended Varget for it's performace in these two cartridges. It looks like I can use it in all 3 calibers based on load data that's available.

However, I noticed under the 7 MM Mag on the Hodgdon web site, it only goes up to a 130 grain bullet (max 53 gr of Varget for 2998 fps). When I look at the 270 Win loads using Varget, they go up to a 140 gr bullet with Varget (max 43.7 gr. at 2772 fps). It is case capcity and shape that limits the 7 MM mag with Varget to a 130 gr bullet...or did they just not work up 7 mm mag loads beyond at 130 gr bullet. Thoughts on using the 270 data in the 7 MM Mag?

Buy a manual made by the manufacturer of your bullets. IE: Speer if you are using Speer bullets, Nosler for Nosler bullets etc etc. Then you find all appropriate data for all bullet weights you are interested in.

Hey Buckmark, I just looked at the Hodgdon web site and found loads from 100gr - 175gr bullets

Optimum bullet for the 7mm Rem mag would be a 162gr. Here's Hodgdon's best for the weight bullet;

162 GR. HDY SPBT 162 Retumbo .284" COL 3.290" start load 69.0gr 2787 43,900 CUP MAX LOAD!!!73.5Cgr 2963 50,500 CUP.

I would also try Alliant's Reloader 22 which is recommended by Alliant as THE powder for 7mm Rem. mag.

No, DO NOT use data for one caliber for another!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, welcome to the site. If you need help, all you have to do is ask.

I would only use published data from a reputable source like a reloading manual and not assume that because one powder works fine with one bullet of a certain weight and caliber, that it should work fine with another bullet same weight but different caliber etc. There must be reasons as to why there is no data listed for the 140 gr 7mm using Varget powder.

You've got to match the powder to the case and bullet. Varget seems to be more useful in the smaller cartridges. I'd try a different powder in the 7mm Magnums.
