Howdy A buddy of mine just shot a nice 8 point and was wanting me to help him do a European mount. Does any of my fellow HuntingNuts have any advice on scull prep or recipes for a whitener. I gues I could dilute bleach a little that should work. Any help would be great. Thanks guys........

I came across this some time back and saved it. Hope it is some help.

I have a buddy who reguarly does european mounts with his bucks. He skins them and scrapes the major muscle and meat off of them and then uses a high pressure washer with a turbo tip on it to finish cleaning the meat off and actually blows the brains out the back of the skull with high pressure and the eyeballs. He says this is very effective albeit a bit messy. He then lets them dry and bleaches them with Hydrogen Peroxide,not the weak drugstore peroxide but 80% peroxide that he uses in his hoof trimming buisness. He never cooks his skulls and they look great.

Not me, man, when I saw the headline I thought it would be about Belgian horses....European mount....

The way I do it is to skin and render the head as much as possible, then boil the head until whats left is soft, then give it the jetwash treatent and blow away the reidue. Let the skull dry and then I bleach it by applying Hydrogen peroxide, the strong variety that hairdressers use when turning ugly girls into ugly blonde girls. The way this is done is to put the peroxide onto cotton wool and give the head a cotton wool skullcap. Don't leave it on too long, trial and error is always a sensible approach, then cut the head and mount it. This is just a variation on a theme, most folks have their own method, but it is almost always along these lines.

Hey Joe, I have a European Deer Mount.
The head is looking straight ahead, and the front legs are WAAAYYYY up in the air. It shows that the buck surrendered to me before I took the first shot!!!

I found a couple of kits on Cabela's web site under taxidermy that scored high with customer reviews. The bleaching kit and a european mount kit have the commmercial peroxide plus other chemicals. They run $20 & $50.

Too late for your buddy's deer but thought I would pass it along.
