to turn or not to turn

new to the forum,from south ar. so yall have to excuse the drawl.i shoot varmints,win.243wssm,rem.700 sendero 300 win mag.ive been told that turning the necks is not going to help accuracy or consistentsy since im not shooting match grade guns.what do yall think. popwarlick

Now, your question......this one is out of my league, although I wouldn't sell your rifles short mate......I'm sure that they are more than capable of MOA. Maybe PaulS or Handloader or DallanC are better equipped to handle this query.......or anybody else who has the knowledge. Very Happy

How far south did you came from? Vince & I, plus a few others could actually claim to came from the south! and as Bushy just found out, North folks don't have trouble with our "drawl" Very Happy

Turning the case neck to more uniform thickness may improve your accuracy, it ensures consistent release of the projectile from the case. However, you have to ensure that there is enough neck to hold the projectile securely. Don't over do it, and don't do it unless you know what you are doing.
Of course your gun got to be in good order too. No point in turning the case neck if your barrel is not crowned right, or the rifling has been shot out or ... or...

One of those tasks in handloading that I truly despise. If you are considering it spend a few bucks and buy a tubing mike, make sure to get one with a small enough anvil to fit in your case necks. Measure several cases and you will get an idea of how concentric ....or not, they are. Most I have measured were very good and in factory chambers its doubtful it will improve any at all to turn them. I have to do it for one of my custom jobs in 6mm that has a tight neck and occasionally I have to do it if I am necking some brass down from one size to another.
Ah the Remington Sendero in .300 Win mag....probably the most accurate factory rifle in large hunting calibers that exists. I love mine.

now i subscribe to the school of thought of every little bit helps some way or another, sure you are not using match grade rifles, and you are not using this here or that there. BUT for consistant shots wanting to hit the same spot, turning the neck cant hurt, it is something i dont do personally but the rifle/ammo i use hits where i want it to with out going to the extremes of neck turning, or weighing the slug and only using the ones within .001 of each other, or even going so far as marking how the round is loaded into the chamber and loading it the same way every time.. my .243 will whack a g-hawg where i put the crosshairs, thats all i need.

Moi. I have two custom tight chambered guns. :308 Win and .22-250 Rem. No to tight(bench rest style). I can use factory loads and normal sitzing dies. I was makin 22-250 cases from 243 cases. Then shall to turn case neck.(Ofcourse trimming too) When i was shooting at 300meter (328 yds) turned and Remington case loading makes about 1,3" prints.( My scope only 24x). Maybe I cannÂ´t shoot enough accurate. No more case turning. Kauko.

I have given outside neck turning a try using a Forrester neck turning tool. It is a pain but at least it only needs done once. The first time I tried it was for 270Win in a SigArms SHR970 rifle. One observation I can definitely make is that case runout between reloads was reduced or eliminated. What I mean by this is that before neck turning, a resized case loaded into a case length trimmer would wobble slightly like an out of balance tire. Once I turned the necks, fired, resized and went to trim the cases, wobble was gone.

I believe it may have slightly improved accuracy but not enough to be sure. The rifle shoots about 3/4 MOA with good handloads.

I recently turned necks on some 338 RUM cases but have yet to get to the range with them.

I turn my case necks for factory chambered rifles. BUT - I do it mostly because I enjoy the tinkering, not because it has a great impact on my accracy. I do think my groups are a bit more consistant tho but even that may be hard to prove, more confidence may impove my shooting!

I only cut the usually suggested 60-80% of the neck circumference, just enough to reduce the error without greatly thinning for already oversized chambers.

Dont bother unless the rifles are custom chamberd for a certain neck size.
