Our archery season is still in till the 31st so hopefully will get another one butt so far. Got a spike buck in the muzzleloader season and a seven point with the 308. Both had good body size and are eatin just fine :-D. (Making jerky as we speak :-D). I didn't get out as much as I would have liked, life's bin pretty crazy lately, but a great season none the less. How was your's.

I didn't get a deer, just went with a crossbow all season this time, saw 2 deer one day, but that was when I was walking to the spot I was going to sit at so my crossbow wasn't loaded (for safety). And the other time agian 2 deer were in another part of the property and I stalked them but no shot they moved too far out of range and it went dark so I decided to call it a day.
Just seemed this year that I picked the worst days to go out. Well if I wanted to see deer close enough in range that is, I still enjoyed the outdoors anyways.
Oh well next year.

I dropped a 3x4 with only a couple days left in the season. I shot a cow elk with a bow, my wife shot a 2pt deer halfway through the season after missing a 3pt. She later shot a cow elk with her '06.

After being shut out for a couple of years I had a bit of luck this year.
My first deer was my biggest - a 144 lb (field dressed) doe. I then got a massive two pointer - a 95 lb buck (both with my .358 Win). My final deer was a small doe with the muzzle loader.

Because of work I was only able to hunt a 1/2 a day this past deer season. The seasons here only last 2 weeks as a rule and it happens to be the busiest time of the year at work. This year it had better work out better for me.

I intended to take Monday and Tuesday of last week off and hunt for a long weekend but we got an ice storm in the Texas Hill Country where my lease is and I ended up stuck there the whole week. On top of that, my truck broke down and had to be towed to the dealer. Got a rental truck and having nothing better to do, I hunted. Shot an Axis buck, a whitetail spike and 2 white tail does. Also a couple of feral hogs. Add this to what I shot earlier and it makes 5 whitetails, 1 axis and 1 sika plus those hogs. The most productive season I've ever had but all that meat added together is no more than about half of an elk's worth. Still, my freezer is full.

Hey thats cool.
Question: Do they keep their velvet year around? Its really strange to me to see that thing in velvet with snow on the ground! Some deer around here have already dropped their antlers.
Second: Is it the lighting or do those things have psycho looking red eyes?

Dallan,
Each Axis buck drops his antlers on an annual basis much like a whitetail but each one is on his own schedule. This guy would have been hardhorned in another month or so and dropped them a few months later. I saw other Axis in various stages of antler development. Everything from hardhorned to just sprouting of new ones.
He had some bright white eyes from the flash, much like redeye but white. I used the red eye removal tool in PhotoImpact to improve the eyes but obviously it isn't perfect.
