New here, don't know the ettiquette on naming brands... soooooo.....

I purchased some 60 grain (bullets) loadings in .22 long rifle. I've tried it in several .22's with little success on accuracy past, say, 15 yards. Rate of twist in all the .22's I own just won't stabalize the long heavy bullet. I hope to come up with a barrel with much faster rate of twist.

I did take some short yardage shots on large 'fox' squirrels. This round THUMPS 'em. I think this large, soft lead bullet will work well if used in a barrel with appropriate twist.

I would love to hear others experiences with this or similar rounds.

I use Aguila brand 60 grainers in a Glenfield model 60 on pests. I can get 1" groups at 50 yards with'em.

They really knock possums and coons for a loop!

4rum,
I first saw the Aguils SSS (sub sonic sniper) bullets when they were first introduced at the shot show. The bullet is 60 grains, made by Aguila, the case is a 22 short case made by Ely. The powder is Aguila. The bullet requires a 1-10 twist to stabalize. I have heard just two stories about good groups in standard production 22s, but count that as wishful thinking. I devoted over a year working with the SSS. The standard twist for a 22 LR is 1-16 and the slow twist will not stabalize the bullet. A 1-12 twist will produce an 8-10 inch group at 100 yards. I built two guns, just to shoot the SSS bullets. The 1-12 gun was not that accurate as noted. However, the 60 grain bullet does take rams down on the Field Pistol courrse for silhouett competition. If you or anyone else is considering the 1-10 twist, note that this is a rimfire and the bore diameter of a barrel can not be .224, but must be .221 or .222 Good luck finding a RF barrel or liner in 1-10 twist. But, a 10-22 with a supressor and a 1-10 twist barrel would be pretty special.

By the by, the SSS was produced as a social round, intended for use in handguns with silencers, sniper is a "red herring." But, as a social round, fired a 3-10 feet, it is very effective and has excellent penetration.

Ok thanks for the reply. Thats the round I was speaking of. And I was thinking that it would work great on varmints and small game to include
raccoon and maybe woodchucks at close yardage.

I love .22's and this round certainly adds another dimension to shooting and hunting.

Thanks for the input, it sounds promising. I don't currently own a glenfield, but I may try one. I've shot this round from the Romanian surplus .22's, a Rem. targetmaster, Norinco bolt, Rem. 514 "youth" rifle and some others. I haven't found acceptable hunting accuracy yet with any guns I own.
(1 1/2 to 2 inches at 25 yards).

I will continue to tinker with this round though. I like the concept.

SwampFox;

Great information, thank you. Your input is about what I have found. I'm told that their is a 1-10 twist barrel available for the Ruger 10-22. I had hoped to "luck out" and find a production rifle that this round would perform adequately in. I fully concur with everything you have replied with. Thanks so much for your response.

I got fair accuracy in both of my .22s at 50 yards. My CZ didn't like them as much as my 77-22, and they wouldn't eject from the CZ. They hit the target sideways from my pistol!
Myself, I prefer Velocitors, Winchester Power points, if they ever will produce them again, and CCI Mini mags for putting the thump on critters.

For "quiet"(?) Confused rounds, Remington Subsonics shoot almost as good as Wolf Match Target in my rifles, and PMC Sidewinders do, too, but they are high vel. loads. Noisy! Your results may be different. I have some CCI Subsonic HP that I will test , if it ever warms up. I hate cold hands!

Once I get my Paco Tool, I will try to see if the good rounds can be improved. If not, I have lots of blasting ammo that didn't make the grade, and I can play...uhhh, EXPERIMENT, I meant experiment Very Happy with them.

I've never used any of the big bullet 22 lr's before. I've always just used standard 40 grain in my single shot for grouse and rabbit. For bigger critters including coyotes and jack rabbits a longer ranges, I use my automatic with CCI Stingers. They work very well. I wouldn't hesitate taking a coyote out to 75 yards with them.

About all I ever use in my .22 is the American Eagle LR in either 38gr hp or 40 gr solid. I find them very accurate in my Browning lever .22. All I use it for anymore is gophers. I've never tried any 60 gr bullets.

The 60 bullet in .22 LR is just an intrigueing concept to me. I did thump a couple close in fox squirrels and the round is very efficient. I think it would do as well on some of the varmints already discussed above. I really like .22 rifles... hope I never grow out of 'em.

Well, shooting .22's is really the only firearm you can go out to the range or where ever you shoot and burn off a brick of 500 in a day and not need to take out a second mortgage on the house. It's also a great way to sharpen the hand/eye before hunting season.

We often go out to a big gravel pit where we shoot regularly and play a form of golf with our .22's. Each person throws a golf ball out on the ground and shoots it. Staying where you are, you have to shoot at the golf ball where ever it lands. Who ever gets the ball the furthest away from themselves with 10 shots wins. It's amazing just how hard it is to hit a golf ball at 100 yards or more..... Very Happy Then ya start all over again. After several round of that, the golf ball has had better days, so I put mine out of it misery with my 7 mm Rem mag, nuthin but dust. ....... Evil Devil Again tougher than it sounds at 100+ yards...... Sniper

Grant, that sounds like both awesome practice and a wonderful thing to do with golf balls (I always suspected they might be good for something)

the best .22 AMMO Ive ever used was called 'wait for the coments on this one'ASSIE AMMO.it was a semi hollow the only stuff Ive ever seen like that. we used it on bunnies possoms and goats it was great stuff. I bought a silenced .22 last year and found winchester saubsonic fair thumps possoms from the trees. our possoms weigh somewhere round 2-4kgs hope this helps.
