So I Clean my barrel and the chamber and them I put a very small amount of lubricant on a patch and run it down the barrel. then I lubricate the bolt ETC. I run a dry patch down the barrel to remove the excess.

But there is still some of the initial lube left in the chamber.

The point: Case thrust

Is there really that big of an issue with cleaning case lube off my reloads?
What an interesting mutation.
Just kinda wanted to get back on track. the issue is case lube left behind after reloading. And does it really matter that much?

Not sure if it matters whether it's gun oil or case lube in the chamber. When firing ammunition in any chamber, handgun or rifle, it's supposed to be dry. The case expands out to the chamber wall and must be able to grip that chamber wall upon expansion of the case. I keep my chambers oiled while stored and dry them prior to going to the range or hunt camp.
And Yes. Case lube should be removed after reloading...

Ditto to Bushmaster's comment.

What do you guys want? A gun that lasts forever? Cool

Yep! I like my chambers dry too - I make the effort to make sure they are.

Golly gee PaulS, you make that sound like a bad thing mate. Laughing Laughing

Seriously though, the better condition you maintain your tools in, the longer they last in peak condition. This is also applicable to firearms.

Believe me Vince...PaulS hunts the Great Northwest. He knows about gun preservation. I spent 12 years hunting from Lenex Creek Falls to Spur 10 bridge and from Sunday Creek to Spur 10 bridge fishing the Snoqualimie River Basin and it's gorges. I know the weather where he's at.

I use a gun oil that is 50 / 50 dextronII / kerosine.
I have used it for years and I want to thank Ed Harris for the work he did to provide it for all of us shooters. It came from a recipe for a black powder bore cleaner that was waterless and very effective. I just use the oil and don't make the bore cleaner - don't own any black powder guns.
I am sure that if you do a search for "Ed's Red" on Google you will find the recipe for the bore cleaner and the chemistry behind it and the lubricating oil. I have it somewhere in one of my many books but I have just been making it for so long that I have it memorized and that the chemistry behind it impressed me. I use it inside and outand have never had any problems with it.
