This video is 20 minutes long, but it is eye opening regarding the claims of being fireproof, but more importantly will it survive the actions of extinguishing the fire.

Fireproof Gun Safe

We had a big discussion about this video on a local hunting website months ago. I've since started packing important documents inside a ziplock, which is inside a fireproof documents box, inside the safe. That moisture is what seemingly is doing all the destruction. I wish I had bought a fire and WATER proof documents box originally... never thought about the water damage in a fire inside a safe at the time we got it.

I also think safe placement is important. Basements take alot longer for a fire to burn to them vs being on a ground or 2nd floor of a home.

The video really makes you want heavily re-oil all your guns doesnt it? LOL

Yep...I’m currently rethinking my document storage facility. Currently they are in a “safe” that has no fire protection, but offers great security. I have the ability to exchange that with a bigger, but fireproof safe, which is what I’m thinking of doing. It will also be much more difficult for criminals to break into.
As for firearms...they are all covered by insurance, but I’d hate to loose a couple of them for sentimental reasons, which is why I am planning a cleanup of crap and corruption I have kept “in case it’s needed”.

A gun safe is usually a long-term investment and it's worth it. Most of the insurance companies have made it a requirement to store your gun in a gun safe in order to be fully covered. While you can place them in any locker, it's always better to secure it in a certified safe, especially one that comes with an alarm. A fire rated safe can be important as a house fire can reach 1200 Fahrenheit in just ten minutes, while some guns can begin to melt at 800 Fahrenheit, Thank You!!

The only "fireproof" gun safe available in the UK has a pathetic 30 minute fire rating. Sad

You can add some fire board or fire brick to the outside of the safe and cover that with some 3/4" hardwood panels for looks. Fire board should add another 1/2 hour and the firebrick should add about an hour or more. the hardwood panel will add another 1/2 hour. You will have to leave some space around the door and lock. It might be better to make a room fire resistant and put your safe in the room. It may not be any cheaper but it gives you a man cave to boot. Smile

I think I'll just make sure my insurance more than covers the contents. Very Happy
