Having another Duh moment , I know the 38-40 win. ( .401) and the 44-40 win. (.427) are two of the most misunderstood rounds as for size out there.....But doing measuring of a 12-ga. 2 3/4 shell today ,,,Duh it's only 2.267 inches long ,

My question is do they shrink with age , where'd the 1/2-inch go ?

it gets worse.... its called 2 3/4 BECAUSE it needs room to let the crimp out...you can fit a 3" shell in 2 3/4" gun but pulling trigger isnt recomended...you can fit a 3 1/2" shell in a 3" gun...DEFINATELY NOT RECOMENDED TO FIRE....you can use some 3" with a roll crimp in a 2 3/4" gun because it doesnt need the extra room .....fired its shorter than a star crimp

I remember the old days when they called 2 3/4 ,,,, 2 5/8 ( remington & winchester ), but guess some people had a hard time knowing the difference .
Don't miss them days , when you got your paper hull shells wet they would start coming apart

Now, to add another dimension to the equation, remember, you can get 12g shells in 24 gram, 26 gram (well, that’s the weight I load), 28 gram, 30 gram, 32 gram, 34 gram...then up into the real heavies that need 3” hulls. Each one of those individual shot weights are going to be a different length because of the size of the payload...they are all tight in the hull, consequently all of differing lengths.

Don’t bust a brain cell over it mate...so long as you don’t try poking a 3” in a 2 3/4 chamber, you’re laughing. Now to give you something to really twist ya noggin...look at the internal barrel dimensions of different brand 12g shotguns.

yip some of them 12s are technically a 10ga.

That's part of what had me my head , Was thinking turning a barrel liner for a 12-ga. , just haven't decided on a caliber yet.... something in the back of my mind ,,,,, see I'm old and don't think about sex all the time , like when I was young....

Have a look at the various factory liners made for the 12g mate and plan your design around their ideas. I think so long as the liner is rigid enough and is well supported in the chamber and at the muzzle, what happens between isn’t a major factor.

Had that same thought . on what is already out there , but want something in about 21-24-innches long ,most of what I see are 18 inches or so . leaning more to a .375 or .458 caliber ,just don't know which yet. Something for 50 to maybe 150 yards maximum range .

Yep ,,,, that be her on top ,,,, When you built yours , it got me to thinking again , of a single shot rifle .

Something with a little more power than the 45-70 trapdoor loads that I now use .

Im at 45grns of 2208 and happy with that load so far. I struggle to think how I will/would see excess pressure on the straight walled case that will get slammed back into a flat surface (not that there is wiggle room) so I guess primers will be the only real telltale.....not that Im intending to go hot.

This load was developed using Lee Ranch Dog Mold flat-pointed, cast, gas-check bullets.

In terms of power, the developer considers this a MAXIMUM load and notes this charge fills the case.
The velocity measurement is by chronograph.
Remington +P cases and Mag Tech of Brazil 9-1/2 primers were used in development.

COMMENTS:
This load was run out of a short barreled S/Steel Marlin M-1895, As many of you would know Marlin choose to run large oversize bores in most of their Rifles, Why???? Not sure But so Did many of the old Winchester M-1894 Black powder calibres Like the 38-55-WCF which has been slugged out at .380 to .382" in dia and some possibly bigger? Any way Back to the Marlin Lever Gun in Question, Knowing that the M95 Marlin has a average Bore / Groove size of .460/.461" Dia (Not .457") A guy calling him self Ranch Dog Moulds designed a series of Moulds of the correct Dia for All Marlin Calibres,
He used Lee's interactive program to design his moulds and had Lee Make them for him, I used W-W Case's and 46Gr of AR2207 Powder (its 46.0Gr's of H-4198 In the USA as its the same powder just made in Australia for export to the USA)I Cast my bullets from Wheel Weights+ about 1/4 pure lead by volume I hand sort the cast pills then tumble them for a short time in graphite powder in my tumbler till they coated then Gas Check them and Hand lube/hand tumble them in a plastic dish with my own bullet lube brew, then wipe the bases and noses of the bullets to remove excess lube(these bullets are of the LEE Micro Groove Type with Gas Check)then seat and crimp bullets into place in the forward crimping groove, they feed well,but while not grouping to well in testing this type of load kills bigger beast well,

I hunted Asiatic Water Buffalo In Australia for 16 years with this type of load and it would break both shoulders of a Bull Buff at 60Yards leaving the mushroomed pill under the hide on the far side of the now dead beast results were always good, we did how ever find that with this new gun that it grouped much better (very well) when we lowered the load down to 44.5Gr's of AR2207 (H-4198) Powder with Velocity's in the mid 17 Hundreds(About 1750FPS ) Still a good and capable load. BEING THAT THE RANCH DOG MOULD THROWS A .460 Dia BULLET THAT SEALS IN THE BORE THIS LOAD AND MY TECHNEIQUE SHOWED ONLY THE SMALLEST HINT OF LEAD IN THE BORE, The data here was from a string of 8 shots and a average was taken from that string. NOTE That the correct size of lead bullet to bore fit is critical, a lead bullet should be exact bore size on .001 to .002" Thou: over size to make sure that the bullet seals well with no blow by, Hence leading problem is solved, while .457" Dia 405Gr Remington and Winchester Jacketed bullets grouped very well the rifling marks in their jackets were not much more than a shadow and with 43.5Gr of AR2207 Powder @ 1621-FPS the 405Gr Jacketed pills gave a 3 shot group cutting each other @ 50 Meters Cheers For Now from AussieHunter 14-June-2010 [i]

only checked via book loads...dont own or want a crony..... interesting reading....I can get those 405s in bulk pretty cheaply,not sure if I want to try them as the guy that casts what I currently have does an awesome job.

Know what ya mean,,,, the best advice I can give is use a good wad or a gas check on cast bullets , my old trap-door setup I adjust the powder a little for the elevation ,,,, sight setup will only go so far down on the back sight ....

Wishing you and everyone down that way a safe passage on all these new gun laws . you're gonna need them someday. Same thing trying to happen on this side of the pond .
