Venomous snakes are protected? Who's bright idea was that?

Native snakes are protected in Utah, where we have 6 different species of rattlesnake. You can kill a Great Basin Rattlesnake in self defense and not get fined (they are the most common), but the other 5 can net you $50-$2500 in fines.

If you get caught...

Got to love the green tree frogs
The smallest carpet snakes I have seen here are about 6'
Take care next time you go to step over a fence

Same here Pete. Average length is about 1.5m - 1.8m for the Carpet snakes with Eastern Browns running around the 1m - 1.5m mark...when we see them, although the buggers are around.

I've had 2 of the bloody things in the house at different times, the first one was cranky and doing the cobra thing, the second was staring at me around a corner as I was staring at it around a corner, just after the super human backwards leap with pike I did to avoid stepping on it in my computer room.
No I'm not fond of them.

Was that Carpet snakes mate, or a different type? I have a lot of respect for snakes, but they don't really scare me...although the more venomous, the more respectful I am.

That was 2 eastern browns.
I'm not real worried by pythons or carpet snakes, browns on the other hand turn me into an Olympic sprinter/gymnast..........
Cranky fricken things.

DAMN...Eastern Browns INSIDE !!! That is not good mate. Do you have any idea how they got inside? Might be worth having a look at screen doors etc to make sure there aren't any gaps they can exploit.

Might be time to keep a long handled shovel or a box of .410 loaded with plastic BBs or #10 shot inside.

The old place was a high set built in downstairs, the downstairs back door and garage doors were not a precision fit hence the cat ambushing snake No 1 halfway up the internal stairs.
The new place has screens on everything, the snakes are outside, I'm inside.
And the world is a happy place......

I always thought I might want to visit Australia some day, but after you guys keep listing all the stuff that wants to kill you, I'm starting to re-think that...

Oh come on down.
People do get bitten by snakes, usually because they are trying to kill it or they've stepped on it in long grass.
The drop bears are a much bigger problem for tourists, they're always looking down searching for snakes and drop bears attack from above.
Nice place we got here, no pumas or grizzly bears and we serve cold beer.
