First of all, a really crappy dreary day for photography, but a fabulous day to be catching kokanee salmon on the Kootenai river.

As a side note. The opening scenes for the movie "The Revenant" were filmed at this location.

Thanks SJ. I smoked mine, and my son canned his. Both resulted in some really tasty eats.

That is magnificent country mate. I take it that is your son with his very pretty lady to the left of what I am assuming is your SWMBO. The young fella has to put up a good showing for his lady.

No doubt next time you two go out alone Dad will show the young fella how its done.

These salmon are much smaller than the ones I saw on a video the other night. The Canadian wildlife department were catching and milking fish ready to spawn. Some of them were 25lb+ and up to a metre long. Are all these salmon the same type, or are there different types and sizes depending on the area?

I've never been a real lover of salmon, although I am partial to a nice thin slice or two of smoked salmon from down south of Australia in Tasmania.

Aah...The Great Northwest. How I miss it...

Yes Elvis, one is a tasty snack. A bunch of them is a feast.

Vince. No doubt they are not 25 lbs. These run 2 to 2.5 pounds. They are a landlocked salmon. This run originates in Kootenai lake in British Columbia Canada, which isn't all that far away. That is my son's wife. She is a pretty good fisherwoman also, but for these salmon, she prefers to be the school spotter. She loves to climb the rocks above the river and spot the schools for the rest of us to catch them. There was a day when I could outfish my son, but anymore, he is darn good at catching them. He learned very well.
