Been a while since I posted image of knives I made.
This one I like a lot.
A "Damascus" (pattern welded) kitchen knife.
It is made of 64 layers 15N20 (the light color steel) and 1095 (the dark color steel) done in quasi ladder pattern to match the beautiful burl handle.
Cutting edge about 250 mm
Hidden tang
The handle is made of Gidgee, white vulcanised paper and Melee Burl.
Hardness about 60 HRC.
Thanks for looking.

Geland, you call it a 'kitchen knife', so it's supposed to be used in the kitchen. That makes me wonder: how do you treath your damast and is the knife after being in contact with some (nasty) chemicals still safe to be used in contact with food?
(a bit comparable with the advice not to use battery-lead to make lead bullets because it contains arsenic)
When it's a stupid question, then blame it on the old age. On the other hand: knowing Murphy and Darwin, maybe it's because I do question such things that I reached this age

Nice work Darwin.
Noticeable improvements with each new knife.
Love the gidgee, spacer and black combination in the handle.
If you're not careful you'll get good at this.
Cheers

Aloy, the damask is etched with ferric chloride and wash out with baking soda afterwards to neutralize the acid.
Ferric chloride is commonly used for etching electronics printed circuit boards.
They are very water soluble and would easily washed off from the metal.
I do not know about the toxicity of the chemical, but most if not all damascus knife makers uses this chemical to etch their blades (including Bob Kramer), so I guess this is an acceptable chemical to be used for the purpose.

Vince, again my set up is very rudimentary,
I use forklift tine for anvil, build my own skateboard wheel grinder and gas bottle forge.
Just do it mate..
DHC Pete - thanks mate
Suz.. I'll take one too.. hang on.. it is the only one so it is mine

Iron-III-chloride... I sure would trust that more than products using seleneous acid.
And it really is a nice one. Reminds me somewhat to such a scottish dirk. Nice, simple and easy to use.

It looks a million buck Darwin.
So after all the heating , bashing, fileing , sanding and sharpening, how does it slice?

Thanks Pete, it slices awesomely indeed, the blade is only 2.5 mm at the hilt and is distal tapered all the way to the tip..
Someone persuaded me to sell (awesome $$) it to him, so sadly to me now this is sold... much to the glee of SWMBO.

Sold it to Suz or sold Suz's knife?
I think China might be a better place to hide than Vince's ladder...
