I bought my Kreighoff in 1985 for $9800 , sold it for about $1000 more than I paid for it in 1987 , bought the Merkel with that money , and sold it about five years ago for $2500 more than I paid for it ..
Most European ( not English ) and American doubles .500 caliber and under , if you dont care for all the fancy engraving and such , can be had at reasonable prices compared to English doubles ..
The Searcy is the most accurate of them all , I will never own another Kreighoff ..

The 45-70 is indeed a lightweight when compared to the 600 or 700 NE. However, there are 45-70s and there are 45-70s. The 45-70 in a Mdl 98 Mauser action is a thing of real beauty, a thumper first class. But then, GJ, we got the "Lott a gun" to smoke em, don't we?

Something like knifing a 100kg pig.. the difference is you got only 2 shots where a knife could be used again and again.
Dimitri, I think there is a russian double that goes for about $1000 they are in .308 if I am not wrong..

They do import Russian rifles yes. But when I do manage to save up enough for one, its going to be one for Dangerous Game and the 308Win wont cut it.

I read an article in "Rifle" magazine, or one of the others from that company, some time back where the author killed two Cape Buffalo with one shot from a Marlin .45-70. I think they were Corbon loads. Bullet penetrated completely through a bull and killed a cow behind it. In the Marlin the .45-70 can be loaded to the level of the old .450 Black Powder Express, which was popular in Africa early on. I saw another article recently about using broad-meplat bullets in the .45-70 on African game. It's not the cannon that a .458 Win Mag and up are but its certainly capable.
Dimitri, I saw a Remington Spartan (Russian made) double .30-06 for about $850 the other day. I too would like a double rifle but want something a little bigger. I've been real tempted to get the Pedersoli double muzzle loader in .58 cal, since I already shoot some .58s. It's not an elephant gun but it would be a lot of fun!

I'd take a double in 45-70 if it had a strong action and have it rechambered to 45-120. THAT would work as a elephant gun I believe.

Pedersoli makes a double .45-70 for about $3k I think. The muzzle loaders are around $900. Look for their "Kodiak" rifles.
