Very interesting Mike.

Using 4198 powder a loss of 524 fps and a gain of .006" in group size going from 22" down to 10". I would consider an 18.9% loss in velocity and a very slight improvement in group size to be more than acceptable...for range shooting. For hunting I would be taking a serious look at the projectile and its ability to expand at the lesser velocity.

That's right where everyone should start when developing loads matey: What you want the bullet to do when it hits the target & at what distance (something those who foisted the 5.56x45 on the military missed - especially with the M4).

Finding a bullet & load that works across a wide range of conditions is one of the fun parts of hand loading.

...and its only by handloading that you will find that bullet and load.

Factory loads, at best, are a compromise to suit the "average" shooter and their needs.
