Looks like my next one is now going to be another Ruger .45 Colt project since my wife keeps bugging me about taking my last one. Of course she also keeps pestering me about finishing the two Ruger #1 restocking projects I put on hold 5 years ago after my losing battle with a bench-saw darned near cut off my left fore-finger!

It’s been awhile since I have done any shooting, but way back in January 2010 I purchased a Howa 1500 in 7MM Mag to have this caliber while I worked on my Remington 700. Really big pigs.

Well, last week I finally felt good enough to get to the range and despite a problem with a ignorant miscreant with no idea of proper firearm handling, saftey, or rang etiquette I was able to get a few shots off.

The Howa came with a Nikko Sterling Gold Crown 3x9x42 scope. While doing a pre-check before heading to the range including bore sighting I found that, and please excuse my language, the Nikko scope was a POC (piece of cr-p) the elevation knob would not work and came completely unscrewed, apparently Nikko thinks that gluing the knob to the adjustment post is adequate (Duh!!!). So I installed the only other scope I had on hand, a BSA Platinum 6X24. Not using my own loads yet used inexpensive Remington Core-Lokt 175 grs.

Took one shot at 50 yards and it was adequate (on paper and near zero) so after a couple shots with other rifles I moved the targets out to 100 yards. This is the maximum distance at this public un-managed range. Since where I hunt has a max 300 yard shot I try to set my scope to shot 1¼ high at 100 yards. Yeah so, I‘m lazy.

So anyway, I took a couple more shots and made a minor elevation adjustment and you can see the results. First two ¾’s off dead n-ts adjusted for elevation and second two not to bad after two years of bed rest.

Despite a couple issue with the Howa, trigger stiffness the main complaint. I have limited feeling in my hands, but it felt very heavy to me. If anyone has experience with the Howa what do you suggest? I think overall the rifle performed brilliantly. Did not have time to take any further shots as the range became unsafe due to the afore mentioned effen idiot, I may be almost dead, but I do not want to be totally dead.

So anyway that’s my new rifle and plenty pleased for now, more pleased with the rifle than with my shooting anyway. Maybe I am putting too much money in the Remington. Name and reputation are good but results are better.

Oh yeah, I was so happy with the Howa I forgot a few weeks ago I picked up a Saiga .410 for squirrel kill'n.

Great little blaster having a load of fun with it and some squirrel and dumplings too.

Them Saiga's are insane fun!!!

Banned in SoCal. me thinks. Everything is. I want one in 3" 20g w/ a drum mag for Jack bustin w/ #3 Fasteel's....

Right now workin' on a new shotgun- 3" 20g...20/21" max bbl lentgh, pump, synthetic, sling, got a couple youth model candidates lines up w/ adjustable LOP, max price 300-350$, max weight sub-6#. Use it for home and tight stuff like mtn quail and chukar...
Since I've been swinging the Benelli and its short 24" tube I'm sold on these short pop-guns. They mount so much faster and swing through fast crossers quicker. I know longer tubes do this and that. Carry one, spin on a back flusher, I'm never going back to long tubes while bush kicking. for ground flushers. Short tubes and short stocks for me for quick snap shooting.
