Recently I activated some internal security options to try and slow down the search engine bots that like to crawl around the site. This unfortunately had the side effect of banning a few users IPs in rare cases.

If you have an IP that was banned, let me know by responding to this message or by PM'ing me with the IP and I will reverse the ban on it.

Sorry for the inconvienence.

I am going to take a different approach with the bots. I just deleted the list of banned IPs so all access should be restored.

If bots obeyed the rules set forth by me, it wouldnt be an issue. GoogleBot for example behaves properly but Microsoft's bot floods the server with so many requests it causes the SQL server to throw errors fairly frequently.

MSNBot, which powers Microsoft's Bing search engine, seems to have a different understanding of what is reasonable spider behavior. Mad

It is quite common for MSNBot to request "/robots.txt" 5 or 6 times within a few seconds on any given Web site. I have seen it request URLs that have never existed and seem to be totally made up or applicable to some other site. And, in general, it tends to request pages too frequently and with too many repeat requests in a short amount of time. I have also seen MSNBot request pages or areas of the site that are specifically disallowed in robots.txt files.

I have written to MS on this and still have got no definite reply as to how to control msn/bing bot. At least google put out controls that you can use to control their bot. Good luck Dallan, if I stumble across anything on our sites for work I'll let you know.

Google does no evil and Microsoft does their own thing and causes problems?

Who would have thought THAT would happen???

I assume you have the IP's from the MS bots? Just ban them, Ya don't need MS anyways.
