Any particular reason why? It would be more durable to scratches etc... and recoil is definitely not an issue. I thought the fit and finish of the composite stock savage looked and felt better than wood. Either have floated barrels.

I've done everything but tuck the rascal in and kiss it goodnight. I think it's just the nature of the beast since I know other shooters who have the same problem with the .17Rem. I've glassed it, floated the barrel, done trigger work to it, and even reload using benchrest equipment. I like the rifle. Unfortunately it's not mutual. Best wishes.

The only obvious things I can think of is check the crown and try berger bullets.

You wouldn't be trying reduced loads would you?

My .17Rem. has been glass bedded, the barrel floated, and the trigger turned down as light as I can get it. I've talked to guys with .17Rems. and it's a common enough problem. I haven't lapped the barrel though. It's a terribly finicky caliber in the best of times. When it's on the mark (too seldom) it is a swet shooting sucker. Best wishes.

Funny thing is I have access to about 100-200 people that shoot 17's exclusively for coyotes/bobcats. Most of them use the 17 Rem to one degree or the other. None of them have such problems. The "rule" is buy a 17 Rem if you don't want to fool with case forming, custom dies, and custom barrels..

Once it dries up a bit I'll shoot some groups with factory ammo in my 17 Rem Contender and post the pics.

Give it a try with Berger 25gr non-moly bullets.

EDIT:

Check the crown with a maginifying glass. Consider giving lapping the barrel a try. Your barrel could have been cut near the end of life of the cutter.
