Yes, I was aware of the lesser capacity of military brass. The point I was making was even though the powder was listed under. 308 in the Hodgdon data it really isn't a good choice for that calibre. Even in a Winchester case it required slow loading and tapping to get it all in at 2 grains under the maximum load. The result was an overly compressed load. IMHO the powder shouldn't be listed for 308. I have settled on three good powders and can't remember which powder gave me the problems. It may have been W760 or H414. I do not have any left of either and do not plan on buying more.

I am wondering why the over all length is longer on the four 200 grain bullet loads for the 357 Herrett than with lighter bullets.
I was told by someone that this is an error and I was thinking it had to do with the heavier (longer) bullet and the compressed charges needing more case volume.
I would appreciate clarification on this load

You are the one that is correct. We were able to seat the bullets out further on these bullets which also would allow more powder and help keeping it from being compressed too much.

Mike

So, this is not an error unless the chamber that you use is too short to allow the cartridge to chamber without hitting the lands. Since the cartridge was designed to use blunt pistol bullets it seems that the spire point does not hit the lands in this configuration.

anyway I just thought I would get the information posted so others who question it don't have to "ask Hodgdon" about it.

Arlen,
You sound like a real shooter.
I admire those that will brave the realm of the Herrett wildcats, especially the 357!
Paul is correct as the ogive of spire bullets can be seated farther out than blunt ones. I don't disagree that the manual is mistaken, tho.
I usually seat my bullets just before the rifling and have found that there is no standard leade in these chamberings.
Each barrel must be assessed as to it's allowable depth of bullet seating.
Keep shootin', man!

My .02, Does anybody really use the recommended COAL? I check for length to the lands for every cartridge and bullet that I use in all of my guns and adjust seating depth accordingly

Same here Grey_Wolf. I reload to optimized for my particular rifle.

That's been my experience Jim. I thought a bit more about it and had a couple more thoughts. My son's T3 in 30:06, it has to be loaded with quite a bit of jump when using the 168 gr Berger because it is too long for the magazine - so maybe using "the book" dimensions would work for that one but we still checked first. I have rejected powder/bullet combinations because it would give me less than a bullet depth for seating

Me too, which paid for itself earlier this year, as a new rifle I bought has a short leade.

I have a 30-06 03A3 that has such a long lead that I can't even get a 220 grain bullet close to the lands. Once I find an accurate load with a particular bullet I can adjust the depth to tune the accuracy but it is more than .250" from the lands no matter what. It still shoots groups under an inch at 100 yards so it is fine for hunting. At the other end I have a gun that I have to seat the bullets deep to stay off the lands. Every gun has its challenges and you either work with it or rechamber/replace the barrel. That is what makes reloading so much fun! Smile

I'm not even looking until this "shortage" is over and prices return to normal.
I have enough supplies to get me through five years or so.

Paul , know what you mean on the prices Scratch , I've finally been able to pick-up a couple of hard to find bullets , the Speer .224 33gr. (only 200 pills) over three months looking for that one. Came across 100 hollow points for the 45acp and no 40-cal to be had ,that has a reasonable price.

Did find a Lyman mold #452374 last night @48.59 w/shipping . was a good price as it's a double cavity w/handles .

Very Happy Cheers Cheers Flag Cheers

Hi All

I just bought a Remington 700 LR 7mm Rem Mag
I have Norma cassings and 173gr ELD-X points
I want to start load developement on these rounds but have never reloaded a 7mm Rem mag

What would you guys say is the best speed (FPS) for these rounds

Keep in mind that Hunting in namibia are not very longs shots
The furthest that we basically shoot in Namibia is about 700Meters (765yards)

Thank you

Bako , welcome Howdy
See you've been around for awhile that's good ,so pull up a stump closer to the fire .
Others here would have more knowledge on the 7-mag , as I've Scratch never tried to work up loads for it.

Just don't be a stranger ,,,,,,pete Cheers
