We've had some discussion on the practice of taping up the muzzle of a rifle while hunting, in order to keep junk out of it. Someone at work showed me this video:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5ZeOepdvVE

See why I keep electrical tape in my hunting bag?

Goodness me.... What a collection of awful films of real maroons.
Best,

Should use some tape over the muzzle.

Must keep it clean.

I never, ever, at any time, no way, nah, use tape over the muzzle...no way under any circumstances. Would never trust it.

However, what does provide the security is a condom. Waterproof and "anything else that could get into the barrel" proof....and when I was in the Army, at the 'right price' too.

Seriously though...most importantly, the tape was not across the end of the muzzle...it was around the barrel where it could not contribute in any way to pressure spikes.

That guy sure seemed surprised when his barrel went "hell west and crooked".

Cheers, Vince

I don't know which is better or best but whether you use tape, "cap plugs", a condom or something else to cover the muzzle - use something and keep the business end of your gun out of the mud!

From the video it appears there may have been a bore obstruction. I usually put tape over the end of the barrel when hunting in rain or snow. Take care...

Tape or, somthing to that affect, over the muzzle has no bearing on ballistics or safe opperation of the firearm. In fact, it's been proven over and over again. The P-wave blows the tape off long before the bullet exits. It's also required (with some outfitters) if you ride w/ your rifle in a scabard to prevent trash/debris that settles in the bottom of it from plugging the bore.

That KB was not caused by a barrel condom. I think something else is going on there.

I only believe half of what I see on the web so...and who keeps filiming after something like that anyways?

Myth busters weld a barrel shut and could not get that kind of results. If he had the barrel pointed up that it was full of water maybe. Or his reloads are a little stout for any gun. I think most of the guns that blow up are with reloads and are over loaded. I know I am new here but not that new not to be that unsafe. Mike

Welcome aboard Cuda. Grab yourself a beer and pull up a stump mate.

Sit a while and feel free to jump in with advice and suggestions mate. Also, if you need a question answered...ask away...there is a wealth of experience here and the guys and gals are more than happy to share.

Cheers, Vince

Cuda, I'd like to see that Mythbusters video if you can find the link. I couldn't.

There seems to be a wealth of evidence that muzzle obstructions CAN cause blown barrels. From what I 've seen muzzle obstructions blow the muzzle end of the barrel while over-pressure loads blow the breech end. Maybe some of our gunsmith friends will help with their experiences here.

More often than not it is barrel obstructions - like a stuck nullet - that causes bulged and split barrels.

Uh...I have to ask what is a "nullet?" HA HA HA HA !!!!!!! I had to do it man. Sorry I know what you meant! HA HA HA!!! I like it though, HA HA HA!!!!

SO do ya got any "sno" up there? We got hammered down here in Iowa. Almost had to have the shoulder looked at today after shoveling everything, still got a bit to do but it can wait til tomorrow. It was blowing around so much that I had to let it settle or else I would have had to shovel at least three or four times instead of twice.

Again, I had to do it. Sorry for beign a smart alec. Hope you take it with as much laughter as it gave me.

I couldn't find a video but did find this

"SPINOFF: A .30-06 rifle fired while having a boresight still in the barrel will backfire and explode, creating a cartoon-like banana peel effect as shown in submitted photographs. (From episode 43)

plausible

The Build Team’s test used a brand new rifle. The barrel split several inches when fired with a laser boresight in the barrel. The Build Team surmises that the banana-peel effect could be achieved if this were to happen in an older rifle that has endured more wear and tear from firings."

The gun in this topics video looked like it havd a very thin barrel which may have contributed to the split. Still I wonder ....
