1895ss: the 39A shows up often as a favorite amongst the rimfire crowd and for good reason. Few firearms have retained their craftsmanship over the years, but, the 39A and S&W 41 come to mind as good examples.

The first time one breaks down the 39A is always an experience! I love to demonstrate it for customers. Whack! Whack, whack!! Older ones with some wear just need a lite tap.

Last November we had a used one, circa mid-50s, come through the door and I snatched it up. It would be a contender for my "favorite" and is just plain fun to shoot. Accurate, too.

Regardless of brand, high quality 22s seem to have exceptional accuracy, although, some are more picky about the ammo the prefer. Another favorite of mine is the older Browning T Bolt. I have one in Grade II that delivers outstanding accuracy @ 50yds --- ten shot groups around .60". But, most good 22s will always stay under an inch at that range.

I have a Remington "Mohawk" model 10C. I purchased it at a K-Mart store about 36-37 years ago for $29.95. It was mislabeled as a "singleshot Shotgun." It is a very accurate shooter. It is all original including the open sights. Some people will remember these as one of the Nylon 66 models since it has a nylon manlicher style stock.

Ahhhh, the 510, 511 and 512 Remington Rifles. Just like taterchips, I can not help myself...... I learned to shoot at 5 years on a 510 which I own now. My first rifle was a 512 at 9 years, which I still own.

Groups shot at 25 yards with my favorite 22 rimfire.

I know it's only 25 yards but, for a gun that was pulled from the market because of all the accuracy complaints they received, I think I did ok.

The gun is a Browning A-Bolt Medallion .22
I bought it new in the late 80's for squirrel hunting. I use CCI SGB(small game bullets) when hunting. They shoot almost as good as the Eley's you see here. I was happy to hear CCI brought back the SGB last year. Anyone looking for a good .22 LR hunting bullet should give them a try. Very Happy

Handloader, I agree, I've always heard nothing but good reports about the 39A but I had too many .22's already and didn't need any more. Well now I've gotten rid of them all but one and it's time for a new one. Very Happy

Thanks

CZ 452/Weaver 2.5-7X, and Ruger 77-22, Weaver 4X. Love 'em both!

If I could, I'd have the new Weatherby/Anschutz XXII.

Next, the Marlin 39 Mountie.

And then, because I have never owned a self-loader, the Marlin Model 60, all prpperly scoped, because iron sights just don't work well, any more.

Go-to ammo for reasonable accuracy and reliability:CCI Mini-mag HP.(For 30+ years!)

Winchester Power Point
CCI subsonic.
CCI Velocitor

My rifles shoot a lot of other brands/bullet weights very well. Cool

I was glad to hear that others have fond memories of the little Remington 510s. Mine was made in the '40s and is a very plain single shot bolt-action rifle that my Dad purchased in 1946 for the princely sum of $11 dollars. (I used to think it was $20, but Dad corrected me last week on that.) It is the rifle my brother and I first learned to shoot, as well as the one I used to teach my children, nephews and other new shooters. It has never failed to function and is extremely accurate within the limits of its open sights. It is the first rifle I reach for when the occasion arises necessitating the demise of the occasional "trespasser" skunk or opossum. I have not had the need to adjust sights or fix anything on it since I was entrusted with its safekeeping.

I have other 22s that are fancier or more accurate, but this one is still the one that holds a soft spot in my heart.

I have never owned a .22 rifle. My first rifle was my Winchester mod 94. I have three .22 rifles in my safe, but two belong to my kids and one belongs to my wife. I do own a .22 Woodsman Second series though. I have promised myself that one day I would buy a .22 rifle for myself, but haven't yet. I usually pick up my daughter's 10/22 for pest dispatching...

My 39A was given from my Mom to my Dad in 1964, for their 25th Anniversary.
Dad promptly filed down the stock, and then put a hand rubbed finish on it.

Like Handloader said, it shoots great, and mine even looks prettier than it shoots.

My potential favorite is a T/C Benchmark my wife bought me last year. I haven't got to shoot it much yet but it put 5 rounds into one hole at 30 yards the first day I tried it. Near as I could measure it was a 0.06" group! I'll be trying it at 50 and 100 yards as soon as I can find some more of the Wolf Match ammo I was shooting that day.

By the way, I've always associated Wolf with "cheap" Russian stuff. It seems however that their .22 Match ammo is made in Germany. What little shooting I did with it sure impressed me. Only downside is that it is REALLY greasy.
