Let's get a good clear understanding here. I paid for my medicare. And I have to pay for medicade (which I dislike). I, also, paid for my two retirement checks (a pitence). 22 years in the Navy and 20 years as a civilian. and I paid FICA all those 40 odd years (no choice).
I (the healthy) must pay for you (the sick). I don't think so. You were not my fault. In yer next life be a bit more careful.
obamacare is too damned expensive and we will never be able to afford it even in our best of times. |

You missed it slimjim. I'm against medicade. But I still have to pay for it and I reap no benifits from it. I had good (if not the best) insurance all through my working years that still provides my medical.
medicade is for those who haven't paid into a health insurance plan of any kind. So we get to support their health problems. And my ticker is doin' fine...I have to get my ire up to get my blood pressure up to normal. Rather then 106 over 70.
And Yes...If you see the letters "FICA" on your pay stub you are contributing to your retirement (and medicare) provided you are over 40. I understand that they plan to chang it for those under 40. I'll bet this will be good.
The "occupy wall street" gang are reminicent of the hippy movement of your era Stovey.

Yes we want government funded health care here too. |
Not directed to any of you, but socialized medicine should be limited to the old who are not working. As part of the pension system or something, but not directly under the governments budgets.
I don't know about other "socialized medicine" countries, but here in Canada, in 2009, total health care spending at all levels of government was 121.6 Billion Dollars. Total personal income taxes at all levels (Federal & Provincial) was 248.7 billion dollars in 2009.
Not too bad right? About half the income taxes goes to health care, and we still make 633.7 billion in revenues, so our income taxes are a large fraction of our income at 40%.
BUT ... and a BIG but ... we also managed to spend 190 BILLION dollars on social programs. Which means total costs of our "socialist" utopia that some wacko's in the US want.
Add up the 121.6 Billion in health care for 33 million people. And the 190 Billion in social programs, its 311 Billion or so for "socialism". Or at a cost of 9,500$ per person in Canada. And at a deficit of 60 Billion or so dollars compared to the income tax levels.
In Canada we have a work force size of approximately 13.8 million people (including the 7% or so of unemployed at the moment). Which means, for everyone who is working to pay their "share" of these social programs, we'd need to charge 22,601$ per employed worker.
Can American's afford to pay that much? No, which is why people are trying to target the "ultra-rich" who can just offshore their base of operations and avoid your taxes anyways. This is a sign of a bottom heavy government.

When I said we want government funded health care here too. (I meant Obama wants it) I was referring to what Dimi said about his dental ordeal. Making fun of it, it was a comparison of his ordeal with what you could expect to find in government funded health care. What Obama wants us to buy into, not me!!! It was a joke!!! No offense intended Dimi, just fooling around, but it appears others are suspecting me of wanting gov. funded health care. Couldn't you see my snicker? Oh well all in good fun.
I just had a huge argument with a friend of mine who is Dem. (and stupid) about the protesters and he said he felt like they were doing the right thing. I hope more Democrats think that way. They are supporting what Obama has set out to do and most of the US is against what he wants to do, so it will eventually hurt not help his processes. Especially since the media is continually questioning their protests as meaningless drivel by people that have nothing better to do than make a social event out of it.
They are protesting to do the very things Obama is doing. Can't they see he's doing what they want? It is in support of Obama's plans!! Luckily the Democrats are claiming this protest as their own. A sort of anti-tea party that has even Democrats scratching their heads but they want in on it. It is truly a pedestal to showcase just how dumb they are, and they're doing a really good job of it.
Republicans are being silent during the whole thing, not wanting it to wane in the least, because it's so elegantly perfect for the downfall of the Dems. The news media is handing them the knife (blade first) and asking them to identify what the heck they're doin and they give out a mish-mash of various grievances so the media continues to throw up their hands, saying, I dunno what you said. I love it!! Take control Dems you're doin great!! The presidential election will be a joke. They'll never know what hit em either.
Yeah my friend thinks the government aught to intervene in large corporations' makin lots of money and not giving more to share holders. I told him it's their business what they do with their money, not the government's. He said it was a moral obligation. I asked him if it was against the law to pay their executives so much. He said I missed the point. Again the moral issue. So if he owned a business, he said he wants all the money he could make, but it's those big corporations that don't care enough about their share holders.
You know what? If it doesn't make sense, then it's not supposed to. He said, where would we be if we didn't have government oversight keeping us safe and healthy? You don't think we could take care of ourselves? Nope, what about the recent lettuce scare and other veggie listeria stuff going around. We'd at least stop buying lettuce, wouldn't we? Nope, who would tell us to stop buying lettuce? Well we'd see that it's not healthy to eat and we'd quit buying it. How would you know it's not healthy to eat? By watching other people eat it and get sick. How would you know where it came from? Well I think we would just quit eating lettuce, who cares where it came from. Our conversation went on and on like this until I finally said you know what? I got one thing to say to you F---Off and I hung the phone up.
Unreasonable people, no common sense, lack of self-guidance like the moochers doing the protesting. How the hell did we get along without government intervention before? Simply word of mouth. Guess what the lettuce is lousy don't eat it. What happened to farmers selling lettuce? They looked into the problem (it's their lively-hood for Chris's sake) and fixed it. You don't sell poison and call it good, for very long. The alternative is to pay up the yazoo in taxes for a government bureaucracy( that can't even count very well yet alone accomplish anything without getting rich) to put their kids through college while checking into the situation.
Currently there are more government employed people than civilian workers. Tax revenues are paid by 40% of the population. When you are one of the 40% paying out to the moochers protesting so they can pay off their college loans and over-expensive lifestyles then you have something to gripe about. These people are a self made joke. Listen to what they have to say. Laugh out loud, in their faces, when you hear it. After they get head lice and start smelling like the other filth around them, they'll go away.
Comparisons of them to the tea party is a joke. Comparisons to them and the 60s protesters is a joke. They have no agenda, no leader, no job. They wanna get together and hug each other because they're in debt up their ears and it's their fault. That's ok they need a hug, they need some way to express their remorse in who they elected to lead them. They want the tax payers to bail them out. So what? People will give to them and allow them to use the bathroom and sleep in the streets, but for how long? I think they'll get their government intervention, but they won't like it very much.
Long
winded
Suz

"To whatever end. Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? They have passed like rain on the mountains. Like wind in the meadow. The days have gone down in the west. Behind the hills, into shadow. How did it come to this? "
This started as a dentist joke, hth did we get here?
Me thinks none of us are happy with our present governments.
And as an after thought, dentists arent real popular either, so it seems

I'm happy with the current Federal Government, not happy about the recent provincial election or the city council who refuses to do anything meaningful. If that counts.
Healthcare is a issue, but fact remains, if we cut out social programs and health care, Canada could drop personal income taxes at all levels forever.
With a quick 4 person family, a 100% insurance paid out policy (no co-pay) and a 2,500$ deductible from UnitedOneHealth, it means I can afford health insurance over income tax at 41,000$ of income per year as at 41,000$ per year, my tax total is 6,300$ but insurance is only 6,150$ per year.
When I was single and working in the machine shop, I paid 4,750$ in taxes roughly per year. Which for the exact same plan but for just myself, is only 1,150$ per year. Even if I factored in the girlfriend, I'd still be saving a nice sum of money for the next vacation with health insurance verses income taxes.
I'd rather take my chances and go with insurance personally.
Dimitri
