shot this wee falla(or should I put Fallow?) yesterday,
sure isnt a world beater as only a 3 year old. was out on private land with a few mates for days shooting and had 6 fallow take off from well above us waaaay up a ridge,threw off pack and got steady using frame of pack as a rest and took semi steady shot at range further than I normally would (sighted rifle in day before and have got groups to 1 1/2") google earth and guestimation from aerial photo say 350 yards!!! shot hit and animal staggered then layed down out of sight behind Spaniard bush in tussock. we scooted further up ridge to close gap. got further up ridge and deer got up again, off with pack and tried to line up....plurry sun was directly into scope so took off hat and got young fella to shade front lens of scope with it...hard case trying to get that right as sun was right at wrong angle....anyway got steady and let loose. whack came back and animal rolled down hill..that was at 275yards (much more to my liking)
left young fella sitting on ridge to guide me if needed and went over with Nugget to find animal.
found him no worries and had good look around just incase had fired at 2 animals.
nah just the one so got out knife and took back wheels off then front wheels and back steak attached to skin (done this to last few deer and sure makes life easier) popped them into my new pack along with eye steaks in my beanie and head on outside of pack, wandered 1 km back down hill and carried on with lads to have a go at some wobblies/wallabies Nathan managed one with last round in mag from .270 and his mate Aston snotted hare with my .223..he couldnt quite mange to connect with running wobbly but gave it plurry good go coming VERY VERY closeto connecting c a few times . good day had by all.
photos to show that Radar isnt only one to shoot wee stags for tucker and meat (which is going to my work place on Friday for me to cook up for the lads) SWMBO not a fan of fallow venni so Nathan and I will munch through rest ourselves.

Some damn fine eats to be had there Elvis. Those were long shots, but you were up to the challenge mate...well done.

Elvis, which bullet were you using? The 160 round nose - now that would be a shot at 350 yards ... even 275.

Im a bush hobbit at heart and long range ISNT my thing,
without range finder and printed out pointblank its not ethical either. I set out earlier this year to see if I could get my old rifle to shoot a bit better...reloads that are the same etc etc and have got groups to be consistant 1 1/2" which really means that 350 is at max for me as things stand anyway.
130grn ballistic tip was first and a 130grn Taipan was 2nd. both shoot to same point of impact at 100 and they are both soft enough to use out further..the Taipans in particular.

I am very envious, my last large game was a few years ago..

processed him tonight. from the 30kg/66lb I carried out ended up with 6kg of steak a bucket of meat to turn into sausages and a couple of bones for dogs to chew on. taking steak to work to cook up on BBQ for workmates on Friday for hot lunch..far too good for mere truck drivers but I want to do it.
did the quality control thing tonight and yip its pretty plurry fine eating.

Had a day off work and was going to go up the Rangitata to look for a tahr. Sent a text to Micky and asked if he was keen to come along. He said yeah but Rangitata may be busy on a long weekend, to which I had to agree.
After a quick phone call we decided on another spot with a few wallabies and the odd fallow possibly running around.Decided first light was a good time for any success on the deer so Micky picked me up at 4am for the drive to the spot.
Arrived just on daylight and had a quick chat to a couple of guys camped at carpark about directions we intended to go for the day
Up the first valley we went and very soon saw our first wallaby for the day but was a bit quick for Micky to get a shot at. 3 minutes later we see the same wolly up the hill and Micky pulled of a pretty mean 80 metre freehand shot and nailed it. Another few minutes later and now with the recently developed 110g HP loads in my magazine I spied another wally sitting up the hillside at 70 metres. Up with the rifle and a squeeze and squeeze and squeeze, Bloody safety was on... Flicked it off and bang flop another dead wally. Went and did a quick dissection to check bullet performance which was very impressive. (Micky has load data )
Continued up over spur to look into next valley, scared another wally and were just about to stop on ridge when Micky saw what looked like a fallow buck staring at us from some thick matagouri. Out with the rangefinder, Micky hissing How far,How far??? Couldn't find it in rangefinder so gave estimate of 250/300 metres. Micky said you shoot it but then it got wary and started moving off so Micky let rip with his .270 and a good thud noise came back. Watched carefully as to where it was heading as the matagouri was pretty thick in places and Mickys bitch Meg had stayed home.
I stayed up the hill and Micky headed down into the thick stuff to search for the buck. After walking in a couple of circles and some arm waving from me up the hill he found a blood spot and started tracking. Shortly the buck jumped up and made a last ditch attempt at escaping but a couple of shots from Micky (Trying to headshoot a moving fallow) it was down for the count, and it was only 7am.



A relaxed butchery session had all the salvageable meat in the packs for the massive 1500 metre trek back to the truck. A huge effort compared to Mickys 600 metre walk out with his red stag last weekend.
Back home we went, at my place I managed to twist Mickys arm into having a Tui ( at 11 am ) for being such a GC and he then headed around the corner to his place and a well deserved nana nap. ( Not sure if he did or not but he is a bit older than me so probably needed it )

SWMBO delivered a heap of venison up to Toadlet today so I know my daughter wont starve for the next wee while.

Man, you guys are lucky to have such magnificent beasts to hunt! In my homeland, Belgium, boars are common but you're not supposed to hunt them most of the time, so 90% of your shots are taken at rabbits, wild fowl and deer...
The worst part is that I sometimes go on hunting trips in Russia with colleagues, always with promises of elk, bears and huge boars, but I never managed to bag anything but... rabbits, wild fowl and deer.

Excuse me Goron_308 but in "my" Belgium wild boars are open all the year, except the last 2 weeks of July when the "scouts" are playing in the woods... but welcome to the Nut and when Vince survives his "once-in-a-live-time-trip", he might serve you a beer... but I'm afraid he doesn't serve belgian beers... when you're lucky maybe an empty bottle because I've never seen him give away water that passed a belgian brewery...

heres as good as anywhere else...now fallow have been my nemesis animal,not sure why but I always seem to stuff up the shooting bit with them...heck the last one I shot the wrong deer and fair across the bum at that.... today I finaly got the mokey off my back and cleanly took hind at 60 yards .left home 07;30 left car at 8,back at car by 10 and home in time to cook eye fillets for lunch!!!!
the meat from her is ageing in fridge to feed the crew over up coming duckshooting first week....she was neck shot with 22-250 using a 50 grn ttsx yip it sure was ffective...but with relaxed animal that close I could have used a .22lr!!!!!!
