I don't have a problem with snaring per-se...but to do what that mongrel did is just wrong. Also, he obviously did not want to kill the animal quickly or he doesn't know how to snare properly (which I doubt because he had no problem catching the moose). I doubt he will ever be caught, but if he is..... Mad Evil or Very Mad

Cheers, Vince

I believe the greenie brigade would have a field day if I was to use snares, they would probably lynch me cause the snare is not considered humane enough to use on wee critters!!!
yes I do see the irony...

Use the right snare and setup mate and you shouldn't have a problem. Make sure you cover your butt though mate...check with the local authorities about the legality of snaring.

got another of the little huas today!!! hitting it with a load of #3s out of the 12ga in the trap MIGHT have been a little excessive but it sure was effective!!! Very Happy Very Happy
after talking to a fellow trapper I have changed my baiting a bit. my traps still have a bit of old duck meat with feathers but also have some egg shells and a ping pong ball!!! yes thats right Suz just like in that Aussie classic movie "pricilla" Shocked
ping pong balls look like an egg and apparently work so Ive put some in and so far it looks to be a good idea.

Well done mate...keep at them...if nothing else, you are doing the environment a favour and also getting in a little varmint hunting.

Been a long time since I've trapped anything, even then it was just pocket gophers. A real challenge for sure. Good luck to ya. Very Happy

A few traps from Aloys part of the world. Must admit, they do look effective.

The trap in green should be OK for foxes, but till now I didn't catch any fox in it Sad
The one for magpies is working very good as you can see (or is it because I'm using a jenever bottle to give my decoy a drink:) A normal trap like this is only made in 3 compartments or as the bigger crow trap (still without decoy at the moment) round in 5 compartments.
We also use bigger traps for crows and also much smaller for feral cats and rats.

Hope you enjoy this and find a way to show them to Elvis.
And of course I'm available if you should have questions.

Have fun.

Aloys

PS: and while I was up there, I also made a picture of a feeding bin for feasants. It's made out of a garbage bucket and some PVC aeration thing. It's not a trap, but it sure is a great help when you want to help your feasants a little.

More pics of Aloys traps.

The big crowtraps work excellent. I'll make a picture once the decoy is in and the trap has catched some birds.
Tip: when you want to keep magpies and crows alive, better give them occasionally some dogfeed.

I also came across a couple of pics of a snare. I certainly don't advocate the use of these things, but at a pinch or in an emergency type situation, they will catch game.

Place sticks in the ground, close to each other, so that they form a circular fence with a diameter at least 1.5 yds. Leave a single "entry" hole in this 'fence' just large enough to allow your intended quarry to enter, that's where you place the snare. Put some bait inside the fenced circle to entice the critter. Wait a while then go back to check for a catch. Despatch a caught critter quickly and humanely.

This is only one design for a snare...but it works. Very easy to make, ensuring you use strong enough materials to suit the size of the game you are hoping to catch. Don't forget that you also need to secure the tail end of the snare to something secure like a tree, a deep set peg or something very heavy to stop the critter from doing a runner with your snare around it's neck...not good karma for you or the critter.

Ensure you check the legality of using snares in your area before setting any. It could get very untidy if it is illegal and you are caught. Embarassed Embarassed
