Sad Why arethere so few posts on this page ? Doesn't anyone shoot small game? I shoot more rabbits and squirrels than I do deer and foxes. Come on guys lets get some dialogue going. What did you shoot this weekend? I protect some land from rabbits It's kind of over run and I spent a lot of the time waiting and picking them off as they moved out to graze.

I just had my 15 yr old daughter out Sat. Got her first squirrel. I grew up in Iowa hunting nothing but squirrels, rabbits, quail, and phesants. Kept the freezer full! It is the best way I know to keep shooting and have the benefits of a good meal.

Grouse is going here in Utah finally... yet its the first year in a very long time I didnt go out for it. Sadly I just dont have the time anymore and for some species of small game, that I could hunt locally or even out the back door of the house, housing developments has about eliminated it all.

It actually makes me quite depressed to think of how hard it will be for my boy to experience Pheasant or Dove hunting. Access was easy when I was 14 and bird populations were amazing. Now there is practicaly zero place to hunt Pheasants because city governments annexed all the land and have ordinances against hunting in city limits.

The old days of grab a gun and 5 min later you are hunting is now gone for me... and I grew up in what was once concidered the BOONIES. Now I am surrounded by trophy homes and spots where I killed a deer, a pheasant etc etc are all nice tidy lawns and hedges.

There are still spots where hunting is great and thriving... I just need to figure out how to make a living in such an area and move the heck out of my town Smile

We don't have close seasons on rabbits and squirrels here as they are a real pest. Since the late 1800s when grey squirrels were released from a park into the English countryside they have just bred and bred. Now we have no reds and the greys are ruining woodland. Back in the 50's you could take your squirrel tails to the police station and trade them for either one shilling or a cartridge. They stopped that though. It got too expensive. Rabbits on the otherhand are a pest to farmers and gardeners. Ive had more'n a dozen in my veg patch this year. The pheasant season start's today but we don't usualy shoot till November as a lot of this years birds are too young and don't fly well. Doves or wood pigeons are another pest without any close season. This may sound like a small game shooters paradise but the ground is all tied up so you need permission of the land owner to shoot and there are more shooters than land. so the minute there's a vacancy it's snapped up.

There's a glut of squirrels this year .Ive just come in from a squirrel hunt. I got three .One fell out of the tree and when I sent the dog in it wasn't dead. As she picked it up it hung onto her nosebut she broke it's back ok. Did that dog squeal.

Aah...Because I don't shoot small game?? I will pot a rabbit if it runs in front of me and the Pheasant aren't rising. Of course, when a #6 2 3/4" Winchester Super X HB hits a rabbit at close range I have rabbit hamberger...
