Don,
Yes, they smell very similar to a skunk, but not as strong. Most people that eat them will cut the scent gland out as soon as they are killed. This is supposed to make the meat not taste so musky.

Don,
Javelinas are omnivorous. Their diet would be exactly the same as a feral hog. This includes meat (probably snakes and lizards). Cactus pads are somewhat digestible (the young pads can be cooked and eaten before they get fiberous), however when I see javelinas chewing on prickly pear, they spit it out after chewing it up. It appears that they are using the cactus as a source of water, although they do love to eat pear apples (cactus fruit).
