Anyone else have a grab and go bag so all you got to do is grab your rifle from the safe and head out hunting without forgetting anything at the ready ??

I was using a P37 pack, now I've went to a pistol belt and suspenders with a Butt pack, cause I got a compass in its pouch, 2 canteens (with covers, and one stove and one cup) and I've got a first aid kit pouch now on the belt oh, almost forgot my knife thats on the belt. Just need to get a mag pouch for my M1A.

In my butt pack I currently got, spare ammo, food, change of socks, a small tarp, rope and fire starting items.

What do you do ??

I have a back pack with most of my hunting items in it ,knifes ,compass, matchs,drag rope,small cans of pork and beans, cover scents and doe p, xtra hat, band aides, things of that nature. The ammo or speed loaders for the muzzleloader I always keep in my hunting jacket but keeping some in the back pack wouldn't be a bad idea the memory does go from time to time .

I have a "range" bag that has all the essentials for the range; targets, chrony, tacks, hearing protection, etc. All I have to grab is the gun and ammo.

I also have a backpac for archery hunting with scent covers, scents, lures, grunt tube, rattling rack, etc.

As for rifle season, I make up a backpac every year.

On another note, I have a soft backpac that I filled with a plastic bag full of styrofoam peanuts (for a rifle rest), which is excellent for groundhog hunting when you are walking through many fields cause it doesn't weigh you down.

Like The J's, I too have a range bag (Army Bum Pack) with all the bits and pieces I will need at the range...the same sort of things I will need out hunting... rifle cleaning gear, fixit tools, oil, solvent Spotting scope, binos etc...there is no superfluous things in there. Having said that I don't need to carry that Bum Pack around with me...it stays in the camp. Ammo is carried separately and I take what I need when I go stompin', leaving the rest in the camp. I ALWAYS carry sunscreen...I'm sick of having skin cancers being burnt off and cut out, oh yeah, and also insect repellant.

When I am stomping the oolloo I have a belt upon which I carry two knives, two Shotgunning Pouches...they hold up to 50 12g rounds each...and a Game bag that holds up to four rabbits. I suppose that this is my "Grab Bag". Additionally I carry a 71oz Camelbak that has sufficient water to drink and wash my hands as necessary. If I need it I attach a Goretex jacket to my Camelbak ... nothing worse than your upper body being wet and cold. I always have a few Bandaids etc in a small pack in my pocket.

Anything and everything else is left back in the camp...food, Med Kit etc. I figure that if I need medical attention badly enough to carry a med kit, then I am gonna be in a world of hurt anyway and will need outside assistance.

I carry the medkit cause how I think of it, having the kit around may give me a few minutes or more of extra time or let me get out of the bush on my own 2 feet if possible in the event of a serious injury so its worth the extra weight. Thats why my med-kit is set up to deal with serious injuries (GSW, Bleeders, broken bones) not minor things. Will be upgrading the kit soon though with some better medical supplies.

I hear what you are saying mate, but from my experience if you are suffering from a serious injury you will most likely be unable to deal with it.

Have you done at least an Advanced First Aid Course? Dealing with the three injuries you mention above is not as easy as it sounds. A GSW can be anything from a "simple" "through and through" to a compound injury involving skeletal injuries or even, heaven forbid, a sucking chest wound.

Arterial bleeding, especially a large artery, ie the Femoral Artery, is not an easy injury to deal with without significant knowledge and experience.

Fractures, like a GSW, can vary from a broken Phalange to a compound fracture of an extremity. A fractured Femor can also involve significant blood loss. Fractured vertebrae is a whole different story.

All of these injuries will also involve significant shock. Shock is the single biggest killer of people that suffer a nasty injury and it needs to be treated quickly and correctly.

My mate and I have a good medical kit that can deal with most, if not all, of the scenarios you mention. The only thing it does not have is injectables. Probably the single most useful item that I have is what we called a Shell Dressing in the Army. It is a large sterile pad with a bandage attached...all encased in a waterproof cover. Every part of the shell dressing can be used to assist in treating a wound...even a sucking chest wound. Additionally, you need to be be conversant with every item in your med kit and know how to use it correctly.

I know that there is an extremely strong possibility that I will not be in a position to fix myself in the case of a really bad injury. That is when you need access to outside assistance...a radio, mobile phone, or other means of contacting someone...and a mate who can make use of them while he is attempting to stabilise you.

So, there ya go mate. Not getting on ya case, but as I said...from my experience it is much easier said than done, and without good training you can sometimes do more harm than good.

I know its much easier said then done but makes me feel alittle better knowing I'm atleast alittle prepared.

I'm going to order to replace the more simple "commercial" compression bandages with the new "Israeli" dresses with are ment to work better then plain compression bandages as it has a plastic hook to apply more pressure on the wound itself then the whole area the band is around then a simple compression bandage.

I'm not a expert, but I've read many First Aid books, and tried to learn the best I can. And my abilities have worked so far in my having to do first aid. Even had a doctor approve of the way I delt with a large wound that happend with a knife in the kitchen once stopped the bleeding pretty fast.

To true Vince, Much harm can be done. Therefore IMHO a basic first aid course if not an advanced course should be part of the process of obtaining a drivers licence. It costs alittle but is no weight to carry and linking it to drivers licences would capture a wide section of the community.

Reading First Aid books is a good start, but you really need to do a First Aid course, preferrably an Advanced course, to learn how to treat wounds. At least by doing the course you will have the benefit of an Instructor who most likely has had to do the vast majority of the things in real life that he will teach you. Also you will get "hands on" experience, even with only pretend wounds. A good First Aid course will also allow you to be able to assist others in event of an emergency.

As an aside...its also a good place to find young single girls.

Yep, agree totally mate. Its no burden to carry, and sooner or later each and every one of us will use the knowledge gained.

I am planning on getting some First Aid Courses done the "Wilderness Course" as it deals with things like GSW's and other things you can deal with, need to figure out how to fit it in with me having to work thought.

Getting back to your original post Dimitri.
I pretty much have a pack for every type of huning, and even fishing.
I have a duck hunting pack sack, deer hunting pack that has all of my gear for either firearms or bow hunting.
My winter ice fishing pack, and summer fishing pack.
Anybody raised in Ely also has a pack for everything.

For extended trips I have a list that I keep on what to bring.

I even have a "survival first aid kit" that has so much meds, band aids etc, that my family calls it the "Dr. Quinn" kit.

I have a shoulder bag, designed for waterfowlers, that I carry spare ammo, calls, water, snacks, knife, rope, etc. in when I hunt. It's waterproof and camoed. I picked a shoulder bag so I could carry it while also carrying a climbing tree stand. I use a "Safaris sling" that holds the rifle in fron for the same reason.
