Me too. I have a hide ready and am looking for a cheap form. This time of year it should drive them nuts!

A decoy is one more tool that the caller can use effectively under some circumstances. They can add some entertainment value to calling, too. One can spend very little money or lots of cash on a decoy. The net intent is to divert the attention of an incoming varmint to the decoy which allows the shooter to get on target less obviously.

I've tried most types over the years and find that a simple bundle of feathers tied to a bush is as effective as any commercial model. We recently tested a battery powered one that squirms and, if desired, chirps. The light foam ones that twitter with the slightest breeze is another variety. In fact, I have a collection of decoys. My conclusion is that they are largely unnecessary and simply add complexity to what should be a relatively simple undertaking.

I prefer to set a stand at least several hundred yards from the vehicle. I've taken novice callers out that have special seats, electronic calls and some rather elaborate decoys; they sound like a junk wagon while they are walking to the stand! After a full day of calling (8 to 12 stands), these poor boys are dragging butt.

But, the commercial market loves to sell gadgets for every conceivable situation and to portray them as giving the caller some technological advantage. IMO, a basic hand call, some savy about stand selection, staying still and being able to hit one's target are all that is required for success in the field.

I guess I was a bit off the mark here. I want to use a taxidermy mounted coyote to work the rut times more effectively.

I have never used a store bought decoy but I have hung my rabbit fur bomber hat on a low shrub branch that was blowing in the wind with mixed results.
