I have been looking at a Springfield socom II 308 for a while now.

it looks good. thats fine, but I am having the hardest time finding good reviews on this gun.
I bought a magazine that had a good review of some guy taking it to gun training or somthing like that, and gave it a good work out. and said it was a very good gun.

I know I want a 308 of some sort of gun.
and this gun is not cheap. from $1,400.00 - $1,700.00 .
I can not purchase it any time soon, it will take a while to save up my change money to get this. maybe a year or more. so I have time to think about it.

all you guys here have been wonderfull about giving good advise based on facts, and experience. thats what I appriciate and respect.

I have read a few stories of the spring field socom having gas chamber problems and ejection problems. what I dont know is. are these problems based on the older modle guns. or the new socom II 308 ?
I did see one new spring field soco II 308 have problems. the people shot wolf ammo in it. and they said it blew up.
this was a gun store that has a shooting range. I went there to look at the gun. , it was in perfect condition. the metal was not split. or any signs of distress. but the ejection was stuck closed, and would not open. they said that is what happend becuase of the wolf ammo.
well, I am no gun smith. and I am not that smart . but after reading some articals of this gun having some problems with its actions. I am not real sure that the wolf ammo was at fault. ??
sure, wolf ammo is some times hotter than regular ammo. it shoots great threw my ak-47.
, I have also heard of other ammo brands being too hot and splitting some guns.
that just happens some times.

I am seriuosly thinking about getting a spring field socom II 308. and need your advise.

and I know I have said I was going to get a marlin 45-70. but I gave up on that gun for now.

if I dont get the socom 308.
I did see a Colt 45 simi-auto, that I almost could not walk away from. lol.

Thanks for any help or advise.

I've got no experiance with the M1A's sadly enough. Sad

Since I first held one at a gunshow when I was 14 I knew someday I'll have to get a couple. Myself I'm thinking of going with the standard M1A with a walnut stock. Smile What can I say I like wood. Cool

The gas system problems could be because of the "reworked" gas system Springfield Armory used. This is just my guess though. I don't know and I've never actually seen a SOCOM in person. Smile

There are many other M1A/M14 companies that might make something you like without the same gas system too.

PS. Remember the M14 is the evolution of the "Greatest Battle Impliment Ever Devised" so with that logic it means its even better. The M1A is simply a civilian version. Smile

I was able to hold both in my hands. the m1A standard, with the wood stock. the only thing I did not like about it is, the had gard on top of the gun is ont wood. it is like a synthetic plastic or fiberglass. ??
I dont know why they did not make it all wood.
I do agree. and I would probley go with the standard one. if it was all wood.
to me its like haveing a M1-Grand and putting a synthetic stock on it. I would not like that.

but the socom II looks more modernized, and the black synthetic stock looks ok the way it is.. one good thing about it, it looks like its made to handle some abuse. it could get wet and not have to worry about any wood.

I can not get them all. but if I could I would.

I actually given up on the 45-70.
the colt 45, would be nice. but I have a beretta 9mm. and I am very happy with it. and cheap to shoot.

a 308, is a well balanced all around good bullet. has the power, and good enough flat shooting.

the m1 Grand would be a good choice to get.
if the socom II is a good durable gun, and if it is almost as good in accuracy , it seemed to be the choice to go with.
just need to hear all the good and bad facts about this gun. before I make a choice.

I know I could call the springfield makers of it. but you know they will only give me a good possitive ear full of news.

I have an M1-A Super Match so one thing you need to get out of your mind is the 308 designation and get back to 7.62 Nato. This rifle, to get its best and most consistant accuracy, has to be loaded to a particular pressure range to avoid dammage to the moving parts. There is 308 ammo on the market that will cause undue wear on the parts and consistant use would cause some moving parts failure. Some reloading manuals have seperate sections for the 7.62 Nato in the M1-A or M-14.

I have used an M-14 and M-16 on a social basis. I have also owned an M1A and an AR-10.

Before I spent 1500 to 1700 on an M1A made by anyone, I would buy an AR-10. If you want a real shooter, the AR-10T is the ticket. I sold my AR-10T at Tulsa in April for 1400, a good used 10T at the price range you are looking at, is doable.
