very nice looking slug gun. I bet the muzzle break is a big help on recoil! I had to put a LimbSaver on my 20-guage to prevent coming home with a black & blue shoulder while sighting it in with slugs off the bench.

Thank you Sir...
I would guess that the muzzle brake took away maybe 20% of the felt recoil....

This slug gun has been fully "accurized" with the following work done:
The barrel was shortened 1" / recrowned / muzzle brake added...
The trigger has been adjusted down to 2 lbs...
The base/barrel has been modified to 5-screws and the base was bedded to the barrel...
The forend was pillar/glass bedded...
For a slug gun though, especially in areas that require their use, this gun is hard to beat with accuracy and power to spare....

I don't mind buying the first round, but those slugs is gonna have to buy the next!
Here is H+R's current listing of slug guns: www.hr1871.com/Firearm...raSlug.asp
I've always heard they had fantastic accuracy.

Deersniper is right on the money with his opinion. The 12 Ga. H&R Ultra Slug is one fine shooting slug gun. Having it accurized in exactly the manner Deersniper says would most certainly fine-tune an already fine shooting slug gun. By the way Deersniper, that gun is a work of art. It not only shoots extremely well, it is a real raving beauty. Anyway, you can certainly take Deersniper at his word and believe that a single jagged hole is possible at 100 yds when shooting on a windless day from a sandbagged benchrest. I still find it hard to believe how accurate these relatively inexpensive guns shoot. I also agree that most of them will shoot pretty well with the Federal Hydra Shok ammo. It would probably be wise to try a number of different type sabots and lengths as I have friends who do better with Lightfield EXP, Remington Accutip, or others. Even from the same manufacturer, three identical guns can prefer 3 different sabots and/or length ammo. I truly believe these Ultra Slug guns are the most undervalued guns currently on the market. For what you would pay for a Tar-Hunt, you could buy one of these, put good glass on it, buy a 5-round box of 8 different makes and lengths of ammo to test it with, and pay $400 to $500 to have a good gunsmith accurize it in the way Deersniper describes and still save yourself $1700 or $1800 dollars. In the end, I believe you would have a Slug Gun that would shoot as well (if not better) than the Tar-Hunt you passed on and have $1700 or $1800 to set aside for a rainy day!
By the way, these aren't just good for Deer, they are also excellent hog and bear guns. That 12 Ga. slug carries considerable weight and hits pretty darned hard. For bear and hogs I'd go with the slower but heavier slugs . . . maybe something like the Brenneke Black Magic, Lightfield Commanders, or the Dixie Terminator. Be prepared for some heavy duty felt recoil though. You won't feel it shooting at game but you sure will at the bench. I advise getting and using a good Limb Saver recoil pad if you are going to shoot those bad boys but they will put a big boar hog down and I mean right now! Just remember that the heavier slugs will require different aimpoint adjustments at farther distances, than the lighter slugs will. You need to shoot what you are going to hunt with at the range before using it on game so you will know exactly how to adjust for various distances.
As far as needing multiple shot capability: I have learned through experience that after the first shot, the game is either down or gone anyway!
God bless folks.
