Well, you know, the sport is in the prvelege of hunting, which can be done with weapons, camera, or the naked eye. The right of killing game is only to those with a license. I think there have been a lot of good points made here and we all need to stay cool and think about it!!

In Canada, vint, treaty Indians have the right to hunt period. Basically whenever they want and just about wherever they want. Similarly, non-treay people are supposed to get Band permission to hunt on their traditional lands, but few people bother and few Bands bother enforcing it. It's considered an inherent right, that is a God given right that precedes the treaties with the whites.
I know that there are a LOT of treaty Indians that abuse that right, and I know there are a lot of Indians who do nothing traditional in terms of how they hunt. They should be punished the same as any other poacher as far as I'm concerned. I believe keetowah's point was about the traditional way of hunting and perhaps it wasn't meant so much to be a race issue. I know that that is the way she is learning to hunt and respect for prey and for all of nature is of paramount importance. The Indians that I hunt with and have hunted with in the past are very respectful of that traditional process and path. Those Indians that don't follow this pathmight be the way they are because there's been a government policy bent on beating the traditional ways out of Indians in Canada for the last 119 years. If anyone cares to debate that, I can take the time to dig out documented federal policy, but it's a lot of work that I'd rather avoid. I hope people will take my word for that.

Maybe its my Indian upbringing to hold things that the Creator made sacred and treat it as such, not just go blast something to death...Keetoowah's quote
I was talking about my upbringing, and my traditional beliefs. ... In Oklahoma!!!! not Sask I was expressing my opinion of how I believe animals should be treated.
I am sure that NO one in here knows anything about how I was raised, anymore than I know of I do about them.
And about my Horse, when I want off, he kneels for me.

So who's traditions are more important?
Maybe the 9yr old girl that killed the bear in the beginning of this string was fulfilling one on HER family traditions.
Maybe I have a family tradition to hunt where I live.
Just because MY tradition hasn't been around as long as yours, it doesn't make mine any less important.
We have a tradition here of ignoring a bunch of older traditions.....

[quote="keetoowah"] its not getting tight, I am filled with questions. many questions.
I have been in Hunting class now for 3 nights and the one thing that really bugs me is the lack of respect to the animal that they are killing. Maybe its my Indian upbringing to hold things that the Creator made sacred and treat it as such, not just go blast something to death.[quote="keetoowah"]
I guess I gotta ask...who are you referring to? the WHITE MAN??
I have nothing but the utmost respect for every animal I kill. Even the lowly groundhog has earned my respect...
I NEVER attempt a shot at a female rearing a litter, the little ones deserve a chance to mature too...
Every other critter killed around here is used to the fullest...
with the exception of deer bones...
but were not just blastin' away and picking up the pieces later.
