A beautiful visitor in our garden today. I was going to move him to the bush, but my wife said to just leave him there…so I did. The Carpet Snake…so named because of the patterns on his body…are a python, non venomous and harmless. They will bite, but only if threatened. They average around two metres long (a bit over 6 feet), but can get up to four or five metres long.

These guys are totally harmless mate, and if you are gentle and don’t startle them, them they can be carefully handled. I’ve picked up many of them and safely relocated them to the bushland near my place.

Tricia knows I have a soft spot for the Carpet Python, and she is not afraid of them either…so long as they are peaceful and don’t come near her. She was quite happy to just leave him/her alone in the garden to sun himself.

Most people freak out and call a snake catcher to get rid of the snake, and I would as well if it was an Eastern Brown Snake (claimed to be the deadliest in the world)…they are native to this area and we have them around here. However, when you have a Carpet Python around, you don’t have a rodent problem…you just have to keep an eye on your pets because they can be on the menu as well.

Vince, you grew up with these things... I'm that old that my head is short of space to learn about all your stuff on the other end of the world. So for me all snakes are snakes and all spiders are spiders... and they are all items to avoid.

Fair call mate. We do have a larger number of the world’s venomous and most deadly critters out here…but as you say, we grew up with them.

Snake is nice mate…cooked properly…however I wouldn’t kill and eat a carpet snake, unless I was in dire straits of hunger.

Another visitor to our garden today, a Carpet Python. Not a particularly big snake, only around 1.5 metres or a little longer. He was very relaxed and didn’t feel threatened in any way…he let me get to within about 18 inches to take this pic. They will usually tolerate being gently picked up, but I’ll only do that to relocate one to the bush down the road.
We don’t mind them being around, so I just left this fella alone to do his thing.

How did you know it's a "he"?
In my thoughts snakes are always female... Smile

No idea if it’s male or female mate…that would involve looking at its cloaca and I wouldn’t know what I’m looking at Scratch

We just naturally call all critters “fella” unless we know otherwise.
