Is the 357 max dead? Is anyone using it and planning to keep it?

I had a DW revolver and for some reason I sold it ,wish I had it back. I now have a TC contender with a 14" barrel one of the most accurate barrels I own and this one is here to stay. JIM Flag

Buffalohunter, welcome........and thanks for the reply. I had a contender 10inch barrel that was incredible. < 2inchs consistently at 100yds. This was some years ago in California. Never did get a shot off at the little blacktail. Twice I passed on shots only because I was unsure of my abilities. I should have taken them. I could take marmets at 150 yds all day. I was thinking of getting a barrel for my Encore rifle in the caliber. Sure is tempting.

I have two guns in 357 Maximum, one Contender and a carbine that I made from a modified SKS removing the gas system and rebarreling. There were a lot more mods that I had to do but I ended up with a great little carbine. My brother has a Seville revolver in 357 Max. and a Contender rifle - that I made the barrel for when Thompson's plant burnt down and we couldn't get a barrel for two years. We enjoy using all of them.

If the .357 Max dies, it will be a shame! I have a NEF (22"barrel) that was rechambered from .357 Mag to Max. I have played around with various bullets and settled on the tried and true Remington 200 gr CL at just under 2000'/".
I have stocked up on brass because as you know it could get scare.
There have been friends og mine here at Dixie that wanted to build up a small lever gun for the Max, but it's too long for the little Marlin action.
Some of the single shot shooters of the classic guns (Ballards, Stevens 44 1/2, High and low walll) are playing with it because it matchs the old 38 ballard long.....Overall, it is a very interesting cartridge......James@Dixie Slugs

The 7,62x39 is about the same overall length and the rim is the same diameter. With some work and a new barrel and fabricated magazine shoe you can convert an SKS to a non-gas operated 357 Maximum repeater. I couldn't find a gunsmith to do it in my area so I did it myself. Not easy but it was a fun project that turned out a real shooter.

Just dropped by and thought I would pull up a stump and sit a while. My avitar is aq 357 SM rifle, one of two I have built. The following site lists a couple loads for a rifle:

www.huntingnut.com/ind...dbid=13730

Dead, I hope not. I simply love my little cadet rifle, it is a real thumper and at .5 to .70 groups, who can kick. You will note that I did not go to the light bullets but could probably do a 140 that whistles. I just like the 357 SM and rifle bullets.

Sadly, my last revolver is now gone. I was not shooting them so let them go. I guess I owned a half dozen DWs, an El Dorado or two, a Seville and three Rugers. The 357 SM is a very fine chambering, if you only use it to shoot big long rifle bullets in a 357 mag case.
