HI
Have any of you guys used solids in a 20 guage shotgun??
Where did you get them and what sort of performance did they give on close in pigs and goats etc,

What about large shot like AAA's or SSG??

Does anyone know about casting your own projectiles to suit the 20 guage- sort of making it into a light double rifle??

thanks

ogre,
Speer sells swaged lead round balls that fit the 20 gauge and I have fired them from trimmed wads. They are not as accurate as I would like but they are more accurate than any slug that I used. I can look up the load information if you like.

ogre,
Here is the load, you have to modify the wad so it stays with the ball - like feathers on an arrow. I trim the petals just to half way up the ball and then use "Seals-All" adhesive / sealant to glue the petals to the sides of the ball and bottom of the ball to the wad. The case can be the paper or plastic Federal target shells (I used the ribbed plastic) I would not experiment with any of the components. Understand that you use any load data accepting that it may be dangerous in your gun and under the conditions that you load and use it. Always take all precautions to protect yourself from harm.

Weapon:
Pride of Brazil Shotgun 20 gauge 26 inch barrel full choke

Case
Federal, 2 3/3 inch Plastic Target

Bullet:
300 grain .590 inch diameter

Powder:
IMR SR4756 24 grains

Wad:
Remington SP20 glued and trimmed to the diameter of the LRB

Primer:
Federal 209

1500 fps Muzzle Velocity
3" groups

just wondering if using a .590 ball- what about using a .585 claibre- hard cast projectile or something similar.

600 grain .585 projectile at 1200 maybe- might be really effective.

ogre,

I don't have any data for that much weight in a 20 gauge. That much weight is what you load in a 12 gauge and I don't think you will find any information for 1.37 ounces in any 20 gauge even if you used magnum shells.

Ogre,
be careful doing that. Shotgun pressures are only 12000 LUP and they are different from most everything - sometimes less powder makes more pressure. I don't want you to lose your shotgun or the more important parts. If you decide to do it from scratch be sure and fire the first loads from a gun tied to a tree.

If you are going to play "Slug & Balls" in your 20 gauge smoothbore, the way to go is buy a Lee Key Slug mold and cast your own. Ballistic Products also has a line of slugs and loading data. There are loads for the 20 gauge Key Slug in most loading manuals.......I like the loads in Alliant's manual.......James@Dixie Slugs

I would be interesting in hearing how your project unfolds. This trend toward $2+ per trigger pull ammo is for the birds. I have learned to like "heavy" projectiles in handguns and in rifles as they seem to do a better job on the humane kill. (I mean heavy for caliber a modest velocity = entrance and exit holes!)
My experience shows that that I do not have much need for extended range, so I am interested in anything that will let me do a better job closer in.
For a whitetail hunting round, I would comfortable with a package that will throw a 3" group at 100 yards.
With all the trial lawyers out there, I would not expect the big ammo companies to be to innovative with modestly priced ammo.

We now have an excellent 20 ga 3" Mag load for rifled barrels. John Linebaugh/Todd Corder have tested them at Cody........impressive results!
The bullet is full size-.625"-500 gr- hard cast heated treated. The are not suitable for smoothbores though......Regards, James
