.277 is for 270 and 284 is for 7mm
Unless your 270 is real worn...

Cartridge names sure got confusing! A .38 Special uses a 0.357" diameter bullet but a .38-40 uses a 0.4" diameter bullet. What were those guys drinking??

The 38 S&W uses a .361" diameter bullet. ????
I have a box for sale - Winchester Super X 38 S&W nickel cases and lead 145 grain bullets - factory new ammo (about twelve years ago).

Yes it gets really confusing. Between the military and marketers no wonder. Then you have the many non US calibres given in land rather than bore diameter. Then some are given using bullet diameter which is larger again. I bought some cast, checked 180 grain bullets that measure. 311-.312. Of course it is obvious they are for a. 303 British or then again maybe a 7.62x52R or 7.62x39 both which are actually 7.92. Ever heard of using a. 308 bullet which is also used in the 7.62 NATO but actually measures 7.8mm in a 7.5mm Swiss which normally is loaded with a 7.7mm bullet.

I'll play along !!!
.429 bullet for a 44 mag...... same reason a 44-40 uses a .427 bullet.
At one time they used the O.D. of the loaded cartridge as it's designation.

.303 brit is .312 barrel as .303 from land to land but .312ish groove to groove.
7.62x39mm is from .308 (rugers) through to .312 with most being .311

Mathmatically 7 millimeter = 0.275 590 551 18 inch
However 7mm bullets are all .284" in diameter and 270 calibere bullets are .277"
7mm bullets are .009" larger than the 'bore' diameter and 270 bullets are only .007" larger than bore diameter. 30 and 35 caliber bullets are in the middle at .008" larger than bore diameter. There doesn't seem to be any real method to the madness of bullet size as it relates to bore diameter.
