Yeah...I reckon it is the best way. 98% of the people in the cities have no idea how to live off the land, how to get clean water, find food, live comfortably with minimal possessions. I won't need petrol (it is a nice to have, not a need to have) LPG (propane, butane) again is not necessary, and electric lights are not needed. The only problem area (initially) will be keeping things cold, but again, you don't need electricity for that. I remember when I was a kid, Mum and Dad had a kerosene powered refrigerator that kept things nice and cold...now I'm pretty sure it wouldn't take much to adapt wood to replace the kero. If keeping things cold becomes a problem, then we live day to day and make the most of what we have.
Hunter / gatherers lived for many centuries without these luxuries, and the human race evolved throughout that time until now. Many people have gone soft...I haven't.

I'm sure glad I don't live in a big city like that. When things go wrong you're right in the middle of it. They showed Obama walkin around with Chris Christy the other day, Chris looked dejected and bummed about his state's losses, Obama looked like a celebrity just out of re-hab. very happy to have a Republican by his side.
They got the bulldosers into the rich homes on the beach on day 2, making sure they were comfortable, meanwhile the rest have to wait to be recognized as citizens. President Bush and FEMA never got so much flack as during Katrina, Obama to the media is "looking presidential" and "calm in a crisis".
Maybe the eastern coast has been taught who is eligible for assistance, but if they had some electricity and could watch some news footage on TV they'd see that the NY marathon (at least for a while) had priority over those without. Piles of food and water set aside for the marathon isn't even considered fodder for the have-nots, even though they've decided to cancel the marathon.
I don't have to speak, the news footage speaks for itself but it's been a lesson that speaks louder than words. Huge citys are no place for Humans and huge governments are no match for huge disasters. You have to be able to take care of yourself in any situation or you don't survive. You have to place yourself in a situation less vulnerable to dependency on others (if you're able) and be able to take cover and hunker down when you have to.
There was some footage of an older guy running up and down a multistory building checking on older people because the elevator couldn't work without electricity. He was an old guy too. The camera went into an older couple's apartment and they said they couldn't leave the room without the elevator working. They had no way out. Maybe I'm paranoid and too careful but I'd never put myself in that situation in the first place. If I'm old and feeble please don't put me on the 40th floor and pretend it's not my future coffin. High-rise buildings are for birds not people.
Well we know where the work is now. Obama got his much needed unemployment figures to lower, too bad it's going to be government assistance, although there's lots of plywood and nails to be bought and the west coast has lots of other building supplies to hand over.
I'm through
Suz
