They used arrows before lead bullets and spears before that. Today's new bullet designs are much better in all aspects of peformance.

My question is why, before a hunt, do you expect to shoot WAY out from 300-500 yards in the first place. |
Its better to be prepared and not have the opportunity than have the opportunity and not be prepared. In the Western States hunting deer and elk, those are not uncommon ranges.

I have shot and killed 4 elk, 3 bulls and 1 cow with the 30/06 165gr bullet and with the 340 weatherby magnum and 250gr nosler bullets. And all 4 elk were taken under 200 yards and the elk never detected any difference when shot with the 340wby or 30/06.
Bottom line is you put the bullet in the boiler room, it's over. I do not take shots at extreme yardage even with my weatherby which is very accurate but one must stop and think about shooting game at 300-500 yards as what if the animal moves at the same time you pull the trigger?? The difference between a heart shot and gut shot!!
Shot placement is the best when used at reasonable ranges for the cartridge.

I shoot 300 to 500 yards as the norm. I call beyond 500 yards extreme. 200 yards and less is boring. Wind is the biggest challenge. If I not sure of the winds, 300 is my limit. There is a half a second from trigger break to impact at 500 yards.
Well, my friend decided on a .300 WSM and brought a Tikka T3 Lite home this weekend. He has yet to purchase the LimbSaver recoil pad.

The choices were 300WSM or 300WM right ???
I too would have chosen the WSM..... I don't like belted cartridges !!!

I think they are holding their own in the US or its going to talk longer to tell. I'm with chambered. I'd pick a WSM over a Win Mag. The WSM are more efficient with the powder you feed them. I'm familiar with the powders that work best in it. And, as chambered said, it's not a belted cartridge. My friend is surely going to need a good recoil pad like the LimbSaver on his Tikka. They weight around 6.5 pounds. Hope he enjoys the recoil therapy!

300WSM- shorter action, easier to carry.
300WM- heavier, longer action, better feeding. More wiggle room reloading and very easy to load for. If you load hot the brass wont last.
.06 - some OUTSTANDING 150gr loads on the market now!!! Check them out!!!
Your bullets terminal performance is the ultimate dictating factor for the range you are comfortable shooting at/can place that pill in the right spot.
Caliber has little to do with that. If you cant shoot it and the pill wont perform then....

Tell him congratulations from me,
He made the best rifle choice along with the best calibre choice.
He'll be happy when he sees how well they shoot.
With factory ammo mine loved Winchester 180grn Power Points
If I didn't reload I'd use nothing else
If he goes Barnes projectiles try 165grn [168 is for WM]
It doesn't matter, they are easy to reload and all projectiles and powder combos I've used have shot well
