Wondering if anyone has had any issues with seperation of these bullets,have had nothing but great success with these bullets in my 270 whrby mag ....up until now.shot a cow moose at 350 yards,retreived what was left of the bullet...

Looks more like lead to me from the picture. That's just the jacket? Musta hit some heavy bone or two. Wonder if that was an A frame mixed in the bunch. Any lead in the back?

you retrieved what was left of the bullet... from a dead moose I presume, I cant see you running along side a live one digging out the projectile??? did it die when you shot it or was there a issue???? dead animal = the plurry thing worked!!!! If they have been working for you dont over think this just go with it.

I agree with elvis, dead animal, no complaints. I read somewhere, years ago, Vernon Speer discovered that when making a cup and core bullet, the lead will oxidize and cause slippage with the jacket. To fix this issue, he developed the "hot core" method where he pours the core of the bullet with molten lead. It fuzed the lead to the jacket. This year I'm using a barnes tipped tripple shock bullet and will see how they do.

This is not unusual for a lead-core bullet. They often lose 30 to 40 percent of their weight as they mushroom. I changed over to Barnes TSX, TTSX, and Hornady GMX. These monolithic copper/copper-zinc bullets mushroom and retain their original weight and achieve deeper penetration - even with a bullet that has a lower initial weight. The Hornady 130gr GMX has been very accurate in my .270 Win.

Gotta agree with the rest...dead is dead mate. If you have had great performance with these bullets in the past, then I can only assume that you have encountered a bullet that has had a small flaw somewhere inside that has allowed the lead to slip. Another reason for the separation may be the jacket "grabbing" / "catching" onto something inside the carcass and the lead having just enough slip and momentum to keep going and separate. Did you recover any of the lead? If so, was a badly beat up or nice and neat?

There are any number of reasons why this has happened, but at the end of the day, the bullet has done it's job and you have a freezer full of meat mate. I wouldn't dwell on it too much unless you find that it is happening more often, then I would be asking questions, or looking for a different bullet. The mono bullets seem to be the "duck's guts" at the moment.

I'm not seeing 80% here. It looks to me like it hit bone.
Having said that, you have 1 moose.
Where abouts from the moose did you dig this out of?

thanx for all the feedback,don't get me wrong,had issues for number of years with over the counter loads,since going too the sirocco have had 100% success rate.Wuz more curious on if there has been issues....past nightmares of mine.Bullet did go through spine,rib and lodged in opposite front shoulder,so ya definitley did its job.

sounds to me like it hit loads of serious resistance thats alot of bone. keep with it I suggest thats a good result from that angle, would a barnes type have done better??? maybe... maybe not. you got your animal, now how does it taste???? just looked at your photo again, that jacket has held together well, how heavy is it??the lead may have gone but thats still a large lump of metal, most jackets Ive retrieved over the years are way smaller than that.

Just about anything except a partition or monolithic would have lost a great deal of mass going through what your bullet did.
Any ballistic tipped bullet has a tendency to lose more mass than a SP at high velocities.

It worked though & that's the main thing.

What does the recovered bullet weigh ???
What did it weigh originally ???

From the amount of shank left I'm betting there's some lead still in there.
