.357 maximum and 454 casull use small rifle primers
.460 S&W, 500 S&W and 500 Wyoming Express use large rifle

wtf I guess their designers don't know what they're doing..... someone needs to tell them they screwed up !!!

They use rife primers due to the "rifle like" pressure. That's the only reason.

I guess it would have been better stated that the various cartridges should be loaded with the primers the manufacturer and SAAMI deem proper.

But feel free to make that call...

I always look at the reloading manual and duplicate what it says as far as I can. If I change any component then I simply back the powder charge down to minimum (10% below max or the listed starting load, which ever is less). I do use the listed type of primer even if I don''t use the same brand of brass - and I usually use the bullet listed (make, weight, and type). Life is less exciting that way - and a lot more fun.

If you are sure your pressure levels are at pistol pressures, and your firing pin won't pierce the primer, and that you won't be on the front page of the newspaper with headlines that read:

RELOADS SHOULD BE BANNED

then by all means give the pistol primers a try. If the load squibs then wait, shake the gun while holding the muzzle in a safe direction, wait, then eject the cartridge and give it a toss - far away! Check the barrel for obstructions, clear, and try it again - or not, as you prefer.
