My nephew and I tried out my new home made E-caller a little after midnight tonight. Since a lot of the snow had sublimated and there was a lot more stalks showing in the field I took th e "Trusty Rusty".243 with the Bushnell firefly scope.

On the second playing of my 10 minute sequence this female came charging in hard. I found her in the scope as she checked up at about 80 yards and the 75 grain Remington Accutip made a clean "Bang -Flop" out of her. No exit wound!!!

Good going guys! Very Happy

No exit? Sounds like it maybe a good bullet choice for 243 shooters wanting to save pelts. May I ask... have you had similar experiences with the 75 grain accutip? I normally use a 222 but at times I also use a 243 (using 75 and 85 grain Hornady V-Maxes). Usually both the v-maxes will devastate a coyote pelt.

Actually - I have had no exit wounds with the 58 and 75 V-maxes either. The only ones I mangled up were marginal hits near the spine. Anything inside the body cavity did not come out.

I did not have any V-maxes loaded up so I bought the Accutips at the store... Two coyotes taken with them no exit with either.

It is real tempting to push these bullets to the maximum velocity (3600-3800+) but the fur damage goes up with velocity. I keep them around 3400-3500 and they go in but not come out.

I keep hearing mention of pelt damage....do you save the pelts and tan them up? Are they a good pelt for keeping?

I would have thought that they would stink like canine.

Cheers, Vince

They do stink a bit but they clean up nice. Russians and Chinese love them for their fur market so a stinky old coyote will make some $ if you skin it out and sell it to a fur buyer.

we used to run them through a clothes dryer post brine/dry when I was a teenager - mom would have had our hides on the barn if we used the ones at home - being the ever sensitive teenagers we were, we used the ones at the laundromat down town and threw in a couple old tennis shoes to soften them up - so the moral of the story is - I was a jerk in my youth and as a result, if you ever find a need to do laundry at a laundromat and you are North of Cheyenne about 70 miles - DON'T USE THESE, although it has been over 25 years so they may have moved up to the 4-pelt dryers by now!
