Is silencer illegal? I have 2-silencers. One for Anschutz 22 LR rifle and one for T/C G2 .357 Rem maximum 14" barrel. There are sub sonic cartidges for 22LR and make them my self for T/C. I load also to my frend sub sonics for his Tikka 55 .308. I use T/C like pistol and with carbine stock and rifle scope. Maybe I shall put silencer to Anschutz Exemplar 22LR-pistol too. Exemplar has 1,5-5x20 pistolscope with high mounts. So Ican use scoup or iron sights.

In Arizona, one obtains the tax stamp and then contacts the silencer manufacturer to build one. Total cost is in the $500 to $750 range.

Silencers are required at many European ranges.

Silencers often change exterior ballistics.

Outside of an issue of "freedom", what is the rationale for owning one?

Silencer in Aussie is the questions you use to make the pooliticians shut up when you ask em about their view and support for gun sports.

Especially now, near the election time.

Oi Vince.. Dont forget to vote 1 for Shooters party mate !!! Smile

Silencers are completly prohibited here as well no special permits to own one. Sad

Handloader,

There are some European countries with mandate that you use a silcener (well actually unless your firing subsonic rounds they are a suppressor) all the time while shooting including while hunting in their Health and Safety laws because it lowers the report of the rifle enough that its not going to cause as bad of a hearing loss. They don't make the firearm completly silent contrary to what Hollywood says they do. Smile

Personally I think using them to reduce the noise is a good idea to protect peoples hearing and to limit the "noise poplution" from hunting and shooting that might bother some people in the area. Smile

Kauko,
What you have in Finland are very generous laws compared to many places. I had this discussion with your silhouette shooters as well. What most folks outside of Finland do not know is that it is legal to hunt at night in Finland. The silencer is used in order not to disturb the neighbors. As has also been pointed out, some ranges also require a silencer. I understand that England also allows a silencer and a silencer is often used to hunt rabbits near villages. Silencer were owned and used all over the US prior to the gun laws of 1928. The 32-20 or 25-20 with a silencer was a favorite for deer hunters.

The reason we need any gun / accessory is because we want it and as it is our God given right, we do not have to justify our ownership to anyone. When you ask "why" you support the idea that there must be a reason, as qualified by another, for that ownership.

Silencers to protect people's hearing? The only amount/degree of shooting that I would do that might affect my hearing would be at the range, target practicing. Hellooo....ear plugs....Can get a big bagfull for about $5 at the drugstore, lot less money than a silencer and...they work!

and of course it really doesn't matter if I lose some hearing cuz I don't listen anyway Very Happy (Which is kind of the way I look at wearing my glasses while driving, "why should I? Nobody else on the road is watching where they're going)

(Thought I might as well say that about myself before Bushy or 1895 did it for me Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy )

Silencers/moderators are allowed(on application) in the UK because of health and saftey problems with personal hearing and disturbance of nieghbouring property owners, it also keeps the namby-pamby do-gooders unaware to a certain extent. One of the gains is that although they do alter the point of impact slightly, because of the extra fore-weight you get less muzzel flip and inherently, you definitely improve grouping and accuracy.

The main gain, is noise reduction for the shooter and sideways, there is not much reduction from in front, just confuses the direction if more than one target species. Have a look at Reflex Moderators , the T8 is what I've got fitted to my .243. Have a look at the technical info.

Silencers fitted to .22lr are only really successful when using subsonic ammo, you still get a reasonable crack when using HV

Only ammunition that I know that doesnt need special loadings to be subsonic and really be more "silenced" then "suppressed" is the 45ACP which is the basis for the Delise carbine of British manufature in WW2. Smile

Subsonic: - Under 1117 fps.
Ely, CCI, Winchester, Lapua to name a few, make subsonic ammo in .22 rimfire, mostly in the 35-45 grain range.

wy111,

I know they sell 22LR subsonic been meaning to buy some actually, but I ment that the original loadings and the currently more common/standard loadings for the 45ACP in 230gr weights is subsonic, unless you to go a real light bullet like a 185gr then it just passes the subsonic mark. Smile
