what we get over here on the farms is weird....
red deer or red wapiti/elk crosses mostly used for velveting so are bred for big racks of antler.....some of these in first year where you would expect just 2 spikes will have christmas trees up to 24'' high with up to 30 points but no shape or symetry to them, sometimes this happens again the next few years before the hormones start to settle.....a bit like pimples and voice breaking on teen boys when puberty kicks in.... by year 8 of these stags lives they have settled down and have gobsmackingly huge heads (the ones you see in glossy brochures shot "on safari") some of these fellas then get sold off and others keep having velvet cut right up untill they have one way trip in truck to freezing works.Ive seen velveted stags regrow small sets of antlers from the remaining button.... the few deer that jumpover/under fence and decide to head for the hills carry the same genes.

Excuse my ignorance but why are they bred for the velvet - what commercial use does it have?

I might be wrong, but some medicine/scientific research purpose the velvet, since they are almost all made of stem cells.
