I have seen dogs that are trained NOT to take food from strangers.
A good example of this is seeing dogs for blind folks, those dogs are trained from pups to be fed ONLY by a few trusted people.
Also, I have seen some guard dogs back in Jakarta that were trained to ATTACK if anyone but their keepers try to feed them.
Only those guard dogs that were kept for show or to play in the movies that will be friend with you when you feed them.

Guess we have less trained Gaurd dogs around here cause I never heard of that kind of training.

Our little guard will NOT accept food from anyone except me or the wife... to the extent that she'll do without for days, we can't even go away and have family she knows come by.....It's HER house!

Wow Joe, a dog thats willing to strave itself.

Well I just finished up ordering some outdoor gear, included is a first aid pouch to put together a slightly better first aid kit then I normally carry while hunting. Hope I don't need to use it in a dog attack.

Gelan is totally correct "Mitri. You will find that most trained Guard Dogs will not take food from anybody except their handler, and this is also usually true in the case of any dog trained for Police or similar para-military type work.

I remember years ago when I was doing security work in Sydney; I had to shoot a German Shepherd guard dog (in the rear of a plant nursery) that no-one could get near or feed....its owner/handler had passed away. I didn't like doing it, but he was a one man dog and it was unfortunately necessary.

I would be extremely careful trusting any dog that has spent the better part of its life behind a chain wire fence. They are usually interest in only one thing....chewin' on ya body!!

I don't think though that there is a need to carry dog bite specific first aid bits and pieces....a dog bite is a very rare thing so long as you are careful.

Ours took only 4 yrs (unheard of as I'm told), but she's the most loyal and lovable pup anyone could want....

I have a heck of a time keeping my dog OUT of the bathtub! If you have the door open and he hears it he's in it. Same with the pond out side! He's only 4 months old!

Well at least you may have a clean puppy...Don't know how clean the pond is...

Hey, Vince, just a note to let you know that I found a cheek piece and it is working quite nicely. Got it from Midway USA, and as you put it, it is good kit!! Thankee for the good advice!!
Also should note that there is a lot good advice going out about guard dogs. A good one will try to attack you right through the glass in a squad car!!!!!!!

Not dog specific, just you know a few nessesities will be going into the kit (this kit might change depending on the new information I'm getting from a experienced medic on another web forum:

* Bandages
* Alcohol Pads
* Small bottle of Betadine (Povidine Iodine)
* Compression Roll (like for sprains)
* Gauze
* Quick-Clot
* Durmabond
* Military 6" Entry/Exit Field Dressing (Or Israeli Dressing)
* CAT Torquet
* Small ziplock bag with medications (Aspirin, Tylenol, Zantac 75, and Gravel)
* CPR Mask

I would include Antivenin for the Massasauga Rattler (the only posionus snake I got to worry about here), but I don't think I'd be able to get my hands on it.

"Mitri......your list of items for your med kit is pretty good. The only other things I used to carry were:

* Sutures (non dissolving type). If the need arose I could use them to sew up a nasty cut, or alternatively they can be used for general sewing tasks.
* Small tube of Xlocaine or Lignocaine cream. May be readily available at your local Chemist or Drugstore.
* Condoms. I've covered this elsewhere in the Forum from memory.
* Safety pins
* Triangular Bandages x 2
* Sterile Eye patches
* Water Purification Tabs
* Sunscreen and Chapstick, although a tube of Zinc Cream will do the job of both.
* A small roll of Micropore or similar adhesive paper tape.

Consider a tube of Betadine Cream in lieu of, or as well as, the liquid Betadine. Diluted (very!) liquid Betadine can be used as a mouthwash/gargle if need be so you could carry both as I found the cream to be most useful.

When carrying drugs or pills, ensure that the "Use By Date" is clearly recorded on the container and also on a list of items by date that is protected from moisture in the Med Kit.

I carry a small sewing kit of a couple of needles and a roll of medium/thinker thread. The Durmabond is to close up wounds like liquid stitches.

By the way I just added eye patches to the list.

As for the drugs I put in freash recent store bought pills in the kit the first camping trip of the year and I simply discard the old stock, all the drugs I buy I make sure have atleast a year before expiry so this method works for me.

Ah, just remembered one other thing I carried......Steri Strips. Very handy.

Apart from that I think that you have most eventualities covered mate.

I heard somewhere that cyanoacrylate (superglue) were used to "stitch wound.
would it be a better method than needle and thread?

also, would an epipen for anaphylaxis reaction to toxins or allergens be useful in the kit?
