My 78 year old Aunt lives in Troy, Mi. a suburb of Detroit. They have a bad Coyote problem there and can't discharge a firearm in the City limits. These suckers have everything they need to multiply, all the Cats & Dogs, garbage to eat and no 223's to thin them out. She has a .22 rifle and See's them in Her back yard all the time. I told her to shoot a few, she's worried about getting in trouble with the law. She can't let Her (little) Dog outside for fear of getting ate., Any ideas? The DNR knows of this over population but would just as soon say they haven't got a problem and leave it at that. No Surprise there.

Crossbow? Check the laws to see if there is any exception for firing a gun in defense. You just have to wonder what city govts are thinking, especially in cases like this. I fully understand the problems related to shooting in an urban area but you'd think the city animal control would do something.

I don't think they know how to handle the problem. I understand about the firing of a rifle there too, but she has a vacant field behind Her, I would probably get in trouble if I lived there. Laughing I told her just to shoot once, that way they couldn't tell where it came from.. She ain't buying it..LOL

Ah, that reminds me, I reside in Sydney south area, and nearby is the Botany Bay,
the place that Captain Cook allegedly set foot for the first time in Oz.

The beach there is very nice to walk on, thus is the local tourist attraction.
There is some rock breakwater extending from the beach to slow down erosion.
And right at the tip of the breakwater is a BIG colony of wild RED FOXES!!

Too bad we are not allowed to shoot em (due to the law)..
or hurt em in anyway (due to the greenies)
even though they are definitely feral animals,
so they are protected just like their neighbour human population around ..

Set up a feeding point OUTSIDE Aunt's your property, in the open paddock.

Liberally lace the meat with poison. Not the nicest thing to do, but if it is the only way to get rid of them, or at least discourage them, well, I see it as a viable solution.

Barring that....I really prefer the crossbow option.

Cape Cod (Massachusetts) also has an overpopulation of 'yotes. Most who shoot them use bows. The trouble there is, too many wishy-washy greenies.

I live in the middle of Phoenix, and yesterday I saw a coyote carrying someones pet rabbit-dead now. He dropped in in the street and I went over to look and sure enough it was one of the brown ones my neighbor raises (when I walked away he came back for it). I've been seeing coyotes on our street for a few years now-helps keep the cat population under control at least.

I did call the Urban Animal Control Officer from the Game and Fish Dept. and got his voice mail. But this is one guy and he covers an area with about 2 million people! Maybe he will reach our area in 3 years.

A cross bow would be a good way to thin them out in the City limits but my Aunt is 78 years old and the bow thing might not be the best choice for Her, and I live a good 1.5 hours away..The DNR or animal control will do nothing about this problem, too short staffed and not enough support from their superiors.. the anti's would string them up if they harmed God creatures.. Laughing

Are there any compressed air pellet rifles that she could handle and would shoot a .22 cal pellet at 900 fps. That way she wouldn't have to cock it and there wouldn't be significant noise. I don't think it would kill instantly but the wound would most likely be fatal and work faster than poison.

Glockster....time for you to spend a little time with your dear old Aunt mate.

On the way to visit with her, stop in at a farm/produce supply place well away from her area, and purchase a quantity of strychnine, 1080 or similar poison. Oh yeah, and buy some cheap meat from the butcher, then liberally lace it with the poison of choice. Go for a walk in the dark and place a number of these poison baits out, noting their position with your GPS so you can go straight back to them. Check the baits daily and remove/replace as necessary.

I know it isn't the nicest way to deal with the problem, but if the greenies have the Govt hamstrung, then it is the only option. As nasty as poison is, it will also allow the 'yote to be away from your Aunt's patch when it expires...no cleanup and no finger pointing.

Just don't git caught mate.

In the interim...maybe an electric fence around your Aunt's place will keep the buggers out. A quality solar powered one is more than adequate for the task.

Cheers, Vince

Gidday Elvis,

Yeah, I know it is nasty stuff mate, and personally, I would never use it. However, there are times when one must "go for the Dr" and this is one of them I believe.

One of the things I dislike immensely about 1080 is that a 10 gram bait taken by a 10 kg animal becomes a 10kg bait...but if coyotes are as bad as I've heard them to be, then this is a bit of a blessing in disguise.

My personal preference for solving this problem is to give the coyotes a "lead injection"...but given the situation, this is not an option.

Never heard of a sonic barrier other than the dog collar type. Didn't realise they were available to cover a large area. Sounds like a good option.

Cheers, Vince

yip Vince mate its naasty crap alright. real bad news for dogs they have a very low tolerance for poison and a bite of a poisoned carcase eg something that ate 1080 will kill the dog in a very painfull way. My dad lost his best sheepdog/dog trial/bloody near human/ best worker on farm bla bla bla. from 1080 Sad and the baits area where the baits were laid for possom control were 3-4kms away from our place. a rushed trip to the vets did no good as there is NO antidote. the only hope is blood trasfusions and you tryn get some stranger in to let the vet take blood to save your dog.Another friend of the family lost all his dogs in 1 night eg 10 animals all farm workers when he was overseas representing this country when the fella he had looking after his dogs was accidenaly given poisoned carcasses to feed them.. the possoms were got from a local skin buyer who buys whole posssoms and skins them. the carcasses are great dog tucker unless as appears to have happened in this case some dopy dipshit has gone into a poisoned area and got some animals and taken them in to sell. yip I hate the stuff. get hold of the dvd by the Graf boys.
