I have checked out all three of those manufacturers rifles and they just don't feel right when you shoulder them. I really want another Marlin. The Winchesters feel too much like the old Daisey I had when growing up........... Very Happy

Do you handload?

515034s10ring,
If my memory serves me correctly I believe the big W is going out of business. Sad I also believe that MARLIN is still going strong! Very Happy Just pulling your leg a little bit! Laughing They both make great lever guns.

Nah....Winchester (still) could be saved, and be even stronger yet....But at this day and age firearms and the business of is soo lucrative that the monies involved would exceed even a handfull of investors portfolios. That is due not to actual "worth" but to what it costs to keep up on lawyers and prevent every idiot from slapping a just because lawsuit on them.

Believe it or not, as Winchester changed hands a few times, Marlin has as well. For a while there Marlin produced razor blades to help bring their profits back up......which ultimately worked (just like Winchester with an array of sporting realted products). Then they kept their sales and production (Marlin) pretty steady, not to over do it and see another financial downfall.

Anywho, reading between the lines....so to speak....Winchester "could" save itself and the name......but at what cost are investors willing to pay for any part of it?
Just like S&W.....they would NOT be here if the company that makes the internal frame trigger/hammer locks for them.....didn't buy the rights to them.

10Ring,

Bush passed the Lawful Commrance in Arms Act ... no more lawsuits needed Wink

And as for Winchester lets see who Olin sells the rights to Next year. I dont think it will be USRAC (now part of FN) this time Very Happy

Winchester hasnt changed "hands" in many years. Just different people have bought the rights to it from what I understand from Olin Smile

Then get the 35 remington in a Marlin of course...if you want accuracy. If you want a "name of the past" get a winnie. Very Happy

Dimitri,

Yes, the Lawful Commrance in Arms Act was passed, however.... prior suits and the upkeep of new lawsuits (not covered in the act which is by the direct result of misuse and other statutes of and in S.397) are not out of the picture and cost just as much to address.

Browning (which Fabrique Nationale has owned 90% i believe since 1977) has had their hands in Winchester almost exclusively as of 1990 and the USRAC's affilation with Olin is by ammunition. Olin owns the rights to the Winchester name under the production of brass and ammo, not by firearms. Wink

I think i watch too much TV......J/K Very Happy Although, i was lucky enough to have a good amount of my teachers into firearms through my younger years.....and some things you just never forget growing up Cool

10Ring,

USRAC never owned any rights to Winchester from what I've read. They just had them on contract from Olin. Confused

Olin next year when USRAC contract expries can give it to any other company they wish and FN will be out of the picture.

I myself think that Olin might make the Winchester name come back. Theres got to be some group of investers out there that want to keep Winchester up and American Wink

USRAC made the guns.....owning the rights to the machines, stampings, with and contracted under the Winchester name.

If ya figure though.......Browning is then "worth" more without it's own direct competition from it's sister company......then net proceeds from the sale just makes their "business" level look better for more investing firms to tie in with them.

I hope it doesn't come to that though Sad

For what it's worth, I have a Marlin 336 in .30-30, and it's the best shooting lever gun I've ever seen in my life. It's seriously a 3/4 MOA gun! My last range session, I was printing groups of an inch and a half at 200 yards with Fusion 150 grain ammo, and there's literally no variation in my zero when I change from 125 grain hollowpoints to 180 grain "el Cheapo" ammunition. It's such a great shooter that several of my friends have laid down a "Right of Refusal" claim just in case I ever decide to sell it. It's a pre-1972 model and the gate gets a little sticky sometimes, but if the new ones are anything like the old ones, I'd say go for the .30-30!
