I came across this on the net. Supposedly built in Belgium, it is certainly an interesting looking revolver. Looking at it, I would say the calibre is in the 9mm/.38 range, but I am unsure.

Such things were often in .380 Eley, a blackpowder cartridge with a rim. Slightly shorter than the .38 Special and somewhat smaller in diameter.

It comes from the days we were still allowed to be clever... Smile
It used to be that these small 'Velodog' revolvers were sold on every market and corner near Luik/Liège/Lüttich (and I don't know the english name)

Ok, Aloys, collector of unique firearms. You aren't going to tell us you have a few yourself?

I never thought to confirm this with Aloys...thanks for filling in the blanks mate. What was the intended use of these revolvers? Did they have enough power to be used as a self defence weapon? Although with 18 shots I would think they would be adequate.

I note that they were also available with only two barrels as well...ingenious designs.

Aloys, did this shoot one chamber everytime the trigger was pulled or three at a time?

I'm havin' a guess here Slim, but seeing as how it only has one trigger, three firing pins and no obvious barrel or cylinder selector, I would say three at a time mate.

Sooo...you could always argue that it is really only a six shot. Very Happy

SJ, I'm not having such a thing in my collection as I don't have that many handguns. But I'll send you a picture of something shiny from the same area one of these days and that's in .380 Eley Smile

Vince, don't forget you are on the lower site of the earth. Now some say brains often go down, others will look for them on higher levels...
but I'm convinced that such that thing has a selector on the back or on the hammer itself or why not that part behind the lock up? Bullets were expensive. So I'm almost sure that you can shoot 6 times, change the selector (instead of reloading!), shoot again 6 times and when everybody thinks you're finally finished, you change the selector again and shoot the last 6 bullets.

Those rounds were pretty anemic. The .22 magnum actually has more energy than the .38 S&W and .380 Eley. You are probably right about the selector, and the single round being fired. I will look this up in my catalogue of antique arms, when I get the chance (after dealing with snow, etc.) It would be fun to shoot three rounds at once, though.

Is it an optical illusion or do the inner 6 chambers look smaller? The lower/inner barrel doesn't look smaller but the cylinder sure does?

Optical illusion Slim. Have a look at the first pic where the cylinder is open...you can actually see the chambers are the same size.

Sorry I forgot about this thing, so now one can thank Stovepipe for some extra info.
I've found info on a double barrel Lefaucheux, 2 barrel not side-by-side (juxtaposé) but "superposé" (over/under). On this pistol the middle chambers were also placed right between the chambers on the outside of the cylinder and this pistol would fire successive top and under and again top barrel. This Lefaucheux was still using this stift-cartridges. So if they already could make such a complecated fire-system, the pistol Vince is showing is younger because it already uses central percussion, so they should be able to produce a 3-barrel successive system.

Never forget: there was a time when the Belgians were the bravest among the Gaul. Smile
Don't you know Asterix, Obelix and his dog Idefix? We have a great history but also great doubts about the future Smile

By the way: that Lefaucheux I mentioned above was a 20-shot!
