God bless folks. |
I was in complete agreement with you. Then I thought about a show I watched on TV. The game could be coming right at you after the first shot. The hunter on TV shot a cape buffalo in heavy brush. His second shot was at 15 feet, and he had to jump out of the way. The buffalo dropped after about another 25 yards.
Great post, BearSnot. I'll have to test out some of the ammo you suggested when I get the chance.

Awwwwwsome!!! Whats with the ported barrel. Does it help? Where did you have ti done? |
Mainspring...Deer Sniper is a very accomplished gunsmith and does all the work himself, apart from the laminated stocks you see here. I have to say that I have yet to see a firearm come out of his workshop that I didn't want...his work is simply magnificent.

Thank you for your kind words Vince, I appreciate it....
mainspring,
the gun is a 12 ga. and the barrel is not ported. I added the muzzle brake to the barrel after shortening it 1-inch and recrowning the muzzle...
Does the brake help? I'd guesstimate a 20% reduction in felt rcoil with most slug loads....

Thanks all for helping me out w/the info.
I'll be putting in my order soon and depending how this goes, I for sure will be getting in touch w/you D/Sniper. How long does it take you to do a barrel? Any other mods you do that have done that made a difference?

I thought I had listed every thing done to these slug guns but, if I didn't, here it is again...
MUZZLE RECROWN...
TRIGGER JOB...
PILLAR/GLASS BED FOREND...
MODIFY BASE/BAREL TO 5-SCREWS AND BED BASE TO BARREL...
RECROWN MUZZLE...
ADD MUZZLE BRAKE...
This is everything that can be done to customize these guns to allow them to achieve their full accuracy potential. The only thing left would be for the shooter to pick out several types and brands of slugs for testing and take it from there...
Instead of retyping everything I wrote on my forum, I'll just copy and paste it here - responding to a customers question -
From the guys that I do hear back from though, their guns averaged 3-5 inch groups at 100 yds. (which is why they sent them to me in the first place) and after my accurizing them, they reported groups as large as 1 1/2" to as small as one ragged hole...
With slug guns though, it's always best to buy a collection of both 2 3/4" as well as 3" slugs to see just which one will give the best possible accuracy. Here is a list of slugs that have proven to be exceptionally accurater in the H&R slug guns -
Federal Hydra Shok...
Hornady SST...
Winchester Partition Gold...
Remington Copper Solid...
Lightfield Sabot Slugs...
Federal - Barnes Expander...
Remington Core-Lokt Ultra...
Winchester Suprems Platinum Tip...
Winchester XP3...
Federal Fusion Sabot Slug...
Remington Premier Accu Tip...
Etc., etc....
Some guns will only shoot (accurately) 2 3/4" slugs, while others will only shoot the 3". You can spend a lot of money just "testing" all the various slugs for accuracy but, when you find your guns favorite load, there is no other gun out there that will flatten a deer like what your 12 ga. slug gun will. I know this for a fact because I have shot many deer and hogs with the 12 ga. slugs and one word comes to mind - A-W-E-S-O-M-E. ALL game has been one-shot-kills and at ranges from 20 feet out to as far as a measured 215 yds. What more can I say...."

H&R has NOT discontinued the 12 ga. slug gun and in fact, they even added a new model for this year....

Deer Sniper, do find that the 2 3/4 chambers shoot better with 2 3/4 ammo and the 3" like the 3" stuff better.
I've recently came across an article on this and haven't done any testing yet.
Curious as to what your findings have been !!!

chambered221,
no Sir, I have not found that to be the case. I have seen a lot of 3" chambered slug guns that are most accurate with 2 3/4" slug loads only...
Every gun is unique unto itself and there is no way of knowing what gun will like what load without actually shooting it with various loads and testing it for yourself...
I have owned 2 of the H&R Ultra slug guns that would shoot both the 2 3/4" and 3" shell equally well. The loads just happened to be Federal's Hydra Shok loads whis were loaded with a "50 caliber wasp waisted slug design". The 2 3/4" loads were solid lead and the 3" loads were copper plated....

That is what I've found in the past also !!!
I do hope there is some truth to the article because once I shoot up what I currently have I'll be on a quest for some new ammo. This gun just does not like the 2 3/4 stuff I've feed it. I've only found 1 load that would consistently shoot within a 2" circle @100 and one other that stayed in a 3" circle.
Both have been discontinued.
Everything else is 4+ with an emphasis on the + !!!
