Test drove the blackhawk and 4" at 25 yards is do-able from a modified standing cup and saucer hold with the 265 g.c. Oregons and a starting H110 load, but it is snappy from a 4-5/8" barrel so That's my hunting load. Now I'm looking for a plinking and G.P. load I have alot of 215g p.b. Oregons. I noticed in our database there are two loads that look promising, I thought I would go ahead and load up some with 9 g. of Unique but what about that Universal load anyone have any experience with it or something else similar in the .41. I haven't bought any Universal yet so any other powders like Trailboss or 5744? Thanks.

I have been reloading for the .41 magnum for a long time and have used Unique and IMR4227. Both worked well with my hard cast bullets and jacketed bullets. All the best...
Gil

I have a few 41 mags and like to use IMR 4227 and 2400, I get great results with IMR 4227. You may also try Blue Dot. It works very well also.

I'm with Crackshot.

Myself and another shooter did a lot of testing last year using different powders, powder drops etc.
We checked for leading in the barrel, accuracy and velocity.
With my Blackhawk .41Mag with 4 7/8" barrel, by far the best load was 15.7gr of IMR 4227, and 215gr Cast SWC.
This load chronographed at around 960fps if I remember right.
Very accurate a 25 yards, and pretty easy to shoot.

Eric

IMR 4227 is a great and accurate powder! I always keep at least 4 pounds on hand!

Short bbl/reduced loads like Unique. Esp w/ cast pills. Super verstile powder and clean in snuby's.

Unique powder for a really uniuqe shooter.

Blue Dot I've found is not a good reduced load pistol powder esp for lead pills.

Great, thanks I used to have a can of the old DuPont stuff somewhere. How was recoil compared to unique?

Blue Dot v. Unique recoil?

BD is way slower. Also depends on the load. I've used BD for 240gr JHP/CPRN .44 Mag START loads. It likes it up there in order to get all burned up. Watch it for MAX loads and approach with caution, heard it runs aways pretty quick.
I never really use MAX loads on anything anywanys so...
14.2 gr under Nos 240gr JHP w/ a Rem primer, mixed brass = 3/4 full house old scholl 2400 loads. Recoil is doable but getting up there.

Unique works better for everything in a reduced load and lighter bullets, esp cast.
When I use 9.8gr under a 240gr CLSWC it's a snappy load, quick *pop* recoil but not as much "shove", in my Alaskan w/ no or very minimal leading, clean too ('cept for lube depostis), it's a fun load to shoot and it adjustable. 10gr is too much and it leads.
I really like Unique.
Not 41 mag stuff I know but...just sayin.

Thanks Stovey they are closely related, and I understand the illustration. Have they changed Unique lately I remember using it in the 80's for .357 and it was dirty back then?
