Yeah...That's an idea...Dot the stock sights and see if that makes a difference. Then you (or your son) can make a better decission...

We'll shoot until fall/winter and I'm guessing he'll send it in to have the sights put on when it's to damn cold to go play any how.

Excuse me? Would you expand on that? Even as blind as I am without my reading glasses and the fact that I practice a lot of point shooting because of it. Doesn't mean that a good set of sights aren't a good thing. I do use them too...
Sure tryin' to be a cantankerous sucker today aren't we...?

Who ??? Me !!!
All I'm a saying is the GI model was designed for up close and in person type work !!!
You'll also be amazed at how much faster you can shoot when your not wasting time aligning them sights!!!

'fraid I'll have to disagree with you on this one. I keep the best affordable sights on all my firearms as I can. If the stock sights are inadiquate they get replaced. My Colt came with the same sights as his Springfield GI. Vertually useless...Besides...I bet he finds out that that GI shoots pretty good.

Wow somebody sat on the ornery cactus today!
I have to agree with Bushy a good set of sights will help you acquire and engage targets a lot faster.

I'm 100% for good sights. Point shooting works fine up close but when you get very far out you're going to need to see at least the front sight and a little farther you're going to have to aim. Personally I'd want to engage any possible attacker as far away as possible so I'll take the good sights any day.

Hmmm, I do believe you’ve made mention of some other sites you visit, thanks for the idea!!!
Ok, seriously now!!!
I do think I may have started something here.
First let me say that yes I agree that a good set of sights are important.
My comment in regards to the GI was two fold, first to have a little fun and second to get a feel for what you guys think about point shooting in combat type situations.
It has been proven to me and I’ve passed it along to others the fact you don’t have to rely on your sights as much as you think you do.
Of coarse the max distance is dependent upon the shooter and his abilities.
I have proven to people sometimes their abilities are greater than they even understand or are aware of.
After I started shooting IDPA I had a master class shooter take notice of my shooting and abilities. He came to me one day and started asking questions in regards to how I approached certain COF’s. We talked things over and he finally asked if I was using a sight picture or just point shooting at close targets. I of course told him I used a sight picture. His immediate words were “you’ll never win a match shooting like that”
Long story short, he taught me how to point shoot the close stuff and I’ve managed to become pretty comfortable out to about 10-15 feet depending on the actual set-up.
By employing what he has taught me my times have dramatically dropped.
I have since used low light set-ups to help teach others the same. By using low light at the target and no light at your shooting position it forces you to take a hard focus on your target and not your sights.
If your gun points well for you, you’ll truly be surprised at what you’re capable of doing.
Give it an honest try sometime !!!

OK OK OK don't get your shorts in a knot!!!
I know exactly what you are talking about. I have found when I qualify on the Army 9mm ranges that looking past the sights on the close targets enables me to catch the first motion of the target coming up. I am able to hit the target once before it is up and locked, once as it locks, and once on the way down. Concentrating on the sights does not allow enough time to engage the target more then twice. But the whole time I am aware of where my sites are. The medium range targets require more attention to the sites.
I don't really know about the combat shoots you guys do. I have done a lot of CQB ranges, shoot houses, and reflexive fire ranges during training for Iraq and during my time there to keep skills honed.
My son was pretty surprised at how fast old pa can put 7 rounds accurately in a target at 25 yards.

I scored 300/300 on my federal fire qualification using a form of point shooting. I even go out to 25 yards and do rapid fire point shooting with all rounds on target with atleast 90% center mass hits.
