I have have never used my Winnie on deer, but I'm sure it will be fine. I prefer to use a 270 or 308 for deer hunting. My Weatherby is just too heavy to carry around all day up here in the north Maine woods. If you do want a light load that won't rattle your teeth (as much) might I suggest a 110 gr Barnes XFB pushed by 67 grs of IMR 4064. This is about the lightest bullet you can get in .308 caliber and the Barnes XFB should open nicely with this charge. Mind you I've not tried it myself, I'm taking the information from the Barnes Reloading manual (#3). I have been considering trying some light loads in my gun as well, just to make target shooting with it more inviting. Rolling Eyes

Good hunting.....Blaine

For light loads something I have had good success with is using loads from a cast bullet loading manual. I use the suggested powder for a specific weight of cast bullet but use a jacketed bullet. I usually end up in the 1800 to 2200 FPS range. I have shot several coyotes, this year, with a 30-06 using 28 grain of N133 and a 200 grain RN Sierra. Like hitting them with an 1800 FPS brick. Little pelt damage. (All were less than 100 yards.) I've do this with 270 and 308 also. Don’t see why this can’t work for a 300 Win Mag.

Ben

Howdy. The speer number twelve manual gives various reduced loads for the 300 win mag. 110 gr spire pnt starting load 21grains of SR4759 at 1718fps and max load 25 grains at 2024 fps they give reduced loads for just about every bullet weight they offer.

No offense intended, but light loads for a 300 win mag is like buying a race car to go to the mall.

I'm sorta in the same boat as Chainsaw. I just got the Remington 770...a cheap into into this heavy caliber big game gun. I really like the power it has to offer when needed. However, it would be kinda nice to tone it down a bit at the range in order to dial the scope in, and just have some fun. I can only take so much of the recoil before my shoulder say's "enough!"...too bad. Any suggestions from you folks?

WildHorse.

I was trying to look into the Speer's but couldn't find what you were talking about. If you can post a link I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Bubs

Confused You might checkout the Lyman cast bullet handbook 3rd edition for reduced loads, mine is a first edition and it starts out at 150 gr loads for 300winmag,and goes up to 190gr bullets.

nick harveys manual has 130grn loads listed. if trying a lighter load beware of accuracy issues and over expantion. why I say this is I have loaded 110grn hornady flatbase hollow points for my .270 and loaded them to what manual said would be about 3000fps they grouped 2" not 1" like most other loads in this rifle and as for expantion they are explosive they make beer bottle sized holes in red neck wallabies and dont come out but tissue damage is well naasty. the way I would go for less damage would be slow down a projectile to mild levels so you dont get knocked around.I now use 130grn taipans for wallabies and they are great. Ive loaded 30/06 and 7.62x39 with 125grn taipans and with reasonably light loads they grouped fine hope this helps..

Look at the Hodgdon web site for youth loads or reduced loads. They have a bunch listed. GL

Chainsaw,
Love the handle!
I'm in Australia and own a couple of 300 winnies.
I use mine on roo's quite often with Nosler 150gr Ballistic Tips, I have used the 125gr Ballistic Tips, but some big bucks have simply taken the shot and disappeared into the night appearing totally unscathed! I think they open up too soon and don't penetrate the shoulders on big buck roo's adequately. Shocked
Cheers.
MagnumManiac.
Very Happy
