Probably because it puts less fouling in the bore and can stand higher tempuratures/pressures of lead bullets.

Thanks Dimitri ........... that sure enough looks like em........ I crimp ahead of the last cannelure. You see the line closer to the top of the bullet? Well that's where the bullet begins to taper and that's where I seat it to and then crimp.

Bushy old mate...I could never in a lifetime imagine you being wrong....mistaken on the odd occasion but not wrong.

I use the Lee FCD on both types of bullets and have noticed no difference. In fact I am going to get one for crimping 30.30 instead of using the roll crimp on my die. This is the blurb that Lee putt out on the FCD:

Yup...I've been using a Lee FCD on my .30-30 rounds for a number of years with great satisfaction. It has eliminated two problems...I no longer have to worry about crushed shoulders when seating and crimping (crimping is a seperate step with the FCD) and accurcy has improved...

When I bought my 45-70 some years ago I ordered my Lee reloading dies and the Lee FCD right from Lee Percision's web site. The FCD works excellent and for the price, $12 or $15 they charge for it, it's a steal. I wouldn't crimp any cartridges without one.
