This past year I have used Beartooth Bullets as my primary source for cast bullets for rifles and when I want maximum performance from handguns. It has been a learning process when the goal is to drive cast bullets at the higher velocity levels without leading and with acceptable accuracy. Beartooth's Marshall Stanton has written a 100+ page technical guide filled with recommendations and proceedures that have been helpful in attaining these goals and anyone wishing to enter the arena of high performance cast bullet shooting will benefit from his extensive knowledge.

Recently we have discussed barrel breakin proceedures and, as a tangent issue, cleaning barrel fouling (copper and powder). When using cast bullets, having a barrel completely clean of copper fouling is critical as a precursor to eliminating leading. I learned that the hard way and found Marshall's recommendations and methods of cleaning to be the solution. Too, on his website detailed information is offered on lapping barrels as well as some discussion forums dedicated to cast bullet shooting.

Those wishing to access to excellent gas checked or plain base cast bullets may find Beartooth's resources and products a valuable asset. I certainly have.

The Tech Notes, and Articles on Beartooth, by Marshall and others are fantastic. I especially loved the three piece article on the 444 Marlin. Here's a link to the Tech Notes archives page.

In addition to Beartooth sites, if you want to learn about casting and performance, consider joing the IHMSA and get the monthly news paper. The data in yhe paper is worth the membership fee. The long distance big bore pistol silhouette shooters have on occasion a seperate cast bullet international championship, seperate trophies for cast bullets and a regular cast bullet editor. Most of the silhouette pistols in the unlimited or Production classes use rifle cartridges, so you get the best of both worlds in their articles and books. Important thing with the steel movers is that they all shoot and they all shoot in competition, so the info is from the guys who use the data, daily, in practice. You get the benifit of hours of preperation and practice, plus the actual match results.

Also look at the info from Veral Smith of Lead Bullet Technology better known as LBT. Veral has been in the roll your own business for a long time.

GJ,
I make my own now, pretty much all I use. Over the years I have found folks that made hard cast GC bullets with quality lube, but they usually do not stay around very long. Hard to make a living building quality GC hard cast bullets.
